Well, it's a collective agreement, so you have to make some concessions. And big market teams still have a nice advantage unlike in the NFL.

Leaving salaries out of it, the Mets trading Wheeler for Swihart and Johnson would be like us trading Porcello for a backup catcher or utility guy, and a #5/6 starter/long reliever. You just don't do things like that.

Aha. Well, 2018 should not be long-forgotten. What's the point of it all if a magical, perfect season is quickly forgotten? What you're describing is a neurotic need for constant gratification that by definition cannot be satisfied - the type of mentality you see on game threads. We've already had d-money check in to say he's not very excited with our offseason so far!

I think the Price contract is a perfect example of the kind of high-risk signing that can make or break. Was it a good move or bad move? The jury is still out, I suppose. But Price was integral in winning it all this year, and as another poster here keeps saying, flags fly forever. Plus at the end of 2018 Price looks like the real David Price, healthy and happy, with a rejuvenated pitching approach, and maybe a guy who can be a huge asset in his remaining 4 years. But who knows? The risk and uncertainty are still there.

What's going on here? This offseason has been looked forward to for a couple of years because of the free agencies of these two young studs. There were predictions of red-hot auctions and of Harper maybe becoming the $400 million man. But to date the market for these two has seemed pretty cool and cautious. Brian Cashman said the Yankees are interested in Machado but not at a price of $300 million. Harper turned down a 10 year $300 million offer from the Nats, assuming he'd get much more, right? How is this going to play out?

Let me clarify. notin was presenting a scenario of losing them all and replacing none of them. I'm saying that scenario isn't happening. I'm not saying we'll be able to replace them all. I know that's not possible.

Well put, Star. I'm an accountant and in my profession we have some very conservative principles. But in the fairly insane world of MLB you can't be strictly conservative. You need to make some aggressive moves. The Sox have largely been following that philosophy, going back as far as the signing of Manny Ramirez. And I would say it has paid off quite handsomely.

A long term commitment to Mookie is sensible IMO. Not just because of his ability, but because of his charisma. He's a guy that people will pay to see. That's good for the team's revenues. And on the flip side, a lot of people will be pissed if he goes. Some of that $35 mill a year is being spent on PR, in other words.

Personally I still think they acquire two relievers. Maybe they will try to get away with adding one. We've heard all kinds of rumors that are all over the place. But no rumors of anything being 'imminent'. When push comes to shove I think John Henry wants to make a run at repeating and will authorize the expenditures. But it makes sense they will try to bolster the bullpen a little on the cheap by taking a chance on Herrera or something like that.

So for 2019 we save about 15 million in AAV, but we're minus Rick Porcello. Not a big help for 2019. The only year it really helps is 2021.

I think above all, you do what it takes to keep Mookie Betts. And Henry and Dombrowski have proven to be 'do what it takes' guys. Then you figure out the rest.

Right now I'm very interested to see what Machado and Harper get. It should have a significant impact on what Mookie expects to get.

He's somewhat of an upside play because he's a better athlete than those dime a dozens you're referencing. Dombrowski must have seen him as such or he wouldn't have hung onto him so long.

If we lose all of them and don't replace them, we're up the creek. But that ain't happening of course.

Not really my intention. But if you expand the 2018 numbers to include the postseason, the gap between Mookie and JD gets pretty small. Here are the total numbers for each: Mookie 332/424/607 - 1031 OPS JDM 328/402/620 - 1023 OPS
