I certainly don't know the answer to that. But we do know that we have the highest payroll the last 2 years, that we were more than $40 million over the first tax threshold last year, and that we will be around the same this year. So I have no beefs with JH whatsoever.

Well, this might sound a little simplistic, but you only need to get about 35,000 people in there, which is a tiny fraction of Red Sox Nation. And a big chunk of the crowd is season ticket holders or people they sold or gave their tickets to. All you have to do is put a team on the field that's worth seeing. JH knows that very well.

IMHO the present system is really not that bad - it's practical if nothing else. Having a total free agency system without a draft would be kind of an ugly mess, I think. Talents like Mookie will get paid hugely over their careers. The problem right now seems to be too many owners looking to put too much of the profits in their pockets and not in their teams, and that has to be addressed.

Here's what Henry said: 'We do have constraints. It's not necessarily the luxury tax that is your constraint. It's how much money you're willing to lose.' There's a limit somewhere. Let's say it's 5 million above the highest threshold this year. That would still only leave DD about $10 mill left to play with.

It's getting a little late in the game for the Pirates to trade him this offseason, of course.

The Red Sox have reportedly been in contact with Shawn Kelley. So at least we can surmise they haven't sworn off signing any relievers altogether.

Cervelli's 2019 salary is actually $11.5 million. And of course there have been rumors of the Pirates trying to trade him. And I do think his relatively high salary and the fact that he's in his final year MIGHT have something to do with it. I think it's a reasonable hypothesis at the least.

Take a look at the sequence of posts with Harmony about a possible trade of Vazquez to the Pirates for a reliever, which was raised by notin and continued by me. Harmony basically scoffs at the idea because of Vazquez being blocked by Cervelli. I tried to point out that the Pirates might be motivated to trade Cervelli because of his cost. Harmony responds that the Pirates don't have the same problems with luxury tax that the Red Sox do. I suggested that if the Pirates don't trade Cervelli this offseason they'll probably trade him at the deadline, because he's in the last year of his contract. Harmony responds that the Red Sox might also trade Bogaerts and Porcello at the deadline for the same reason. It seems that when you disagree with him, Harmony has a habit of taking shots at the Red Sox rather than engaging you on your points. It's a bit childish, in my opinion.

Don't speak too soon sk. The Yanks projected 2019 payroll for tax purposes is about 220 mill right now, so they will be paying some tax. It looks like they'll be shedding Gray's 7.5 mill out of that. But I won't be shocked it there are more additions to come. They're just going in some different directions than expected.

Some things just can't be explained-the horrible pitching in 2012 seemed to be a carryover from September, 2011. Jon Lester pitched badly from September, 2011 to somewhere in the middle of the 2013 season, and then he reverted to his former excellence. Inexplicable. But such is baseball.
