    I just can't imagine what it feels like to think about giving up $3 mill a year. I am guessing part of what happens is that other people, including agent, family, friends get the player's ear and suggest they should take as much money as they can get. One other thing I will say, and take it for what it's worth, but some folks who have made a lot of money in sports have gone on to blow a lot of it through bad investments, scams, gambling et cetera (Curt Schilling). Some have dreams of acquiring shares in sports franchises. Crazy as it seems, even these huge sums of money are not necessarily immune from being spent or lost.

    True, but for the average person it's a matter of thousands. For these people it's a matter of millions.

    I said some people call the new Wild Card games 'play in' games. I don't know why you're trying to make such a big deal out of it, other than to troll. My original post was about one run deciding a season.

    It was a playoff because the 2 teams tied for the division lead. Completely different from the current Wild Card games that are called 'play in' games by some. You already know all this, you're just being a snarky jackass as per usual.

    No, you didn't think that, Billy. Some of the posters here call the current Wild Card games play-in games, that much is true.

    Yeah, and we lost the 1978 playoff game by 1 run and 2003 ALCS Game 7 by 1 run. A whole season can be decided by 1 run, that's baseball.

    Hard to know what to believe, but the consensus in the rumor mill seems to be that the White Sox have made the only formal offer to Machado, and it's 'closer to 200 million than to 300 million'.

    White Sox sign Jon Jay, a friend of Machado's he works out with in the offseason.

    If the Yanks get Machado, they will be faves. That's not necessarily a bad thing though.

    Yes. And I certainly agree that Sandoval and Pedroia are not major obstacles when John Henry is willing to spend as if there was no dead money on the books.

    Sure. We were also the only team that won the championship. And in spite of the high payroll the franchise probably turned a profit and fattened up its market value all at the same time. In this case spending big was spending well, I would say.

    Those 2 represented about 40 million. The biggest spending teams usually do have some dead money on the books. Yanks still have Ellsbury.

    You can't really compare the ownership of an MLB franchise to the ownership of a house. Many of the rules of common sense are out the door with the former. By some standards we spent foolishly last year, going more than $40 million over the first tax threshold! But no one is complaining, I don't think, least of all the owner.

    It's not really DD's call as to how much money is left to spend of course.

    Dewey, when it comes to major league sports, never forget that it's us, the fans, who are financing the whole thing, pouring billons into the coffers. And why do we do it? Like I said, it's the craving for entertainment.
