Not necessarily. If John Henry approves signing Kimbrel for 4 years and 60 million and incurs all the extra tax etc., we're better off baseball-wise, he's worse off economically.

The mega-deals actually have not increased quite as much as might have been expected, considering that it's been 18 years since A-Rod signed the groundbreaking 10 year/252 million deal with Texas. The highest now is Stanton's 325 million, but that's a 13-year deal. When some people were predicting Harper would get 400 million a while back, I was skeptical about it.

I'm not sure that applies to Varitek. It's my recollection that Boras was his agent and was looking for a laughably big deal because of Jason's reputation as the great game-caller, but no one was interested and he ended up returning to the Sox on a humblingly small deal. -

The surprising thing when I looked at his numbers is that his WHIP with Boston was virtually identical to his WHIP with Atlanta. The one thing that was significantly different was the HR rate - 0.4 with Atlanta and 0.8 with Boston.

In 2017 the Guardians were doing this with their best reliever, Andrew Miller in the role of 'relief ace', and Cody Allen in the role of closer. It worked well, but of course it only worked well because Miller and Allen were both at the top of their games.

Statistically speaking, I think even the best relief pitchers in history are going to surrender a run in that scenario a certain % of the time. Just not sure what the % is...

I think Robertson's AAV is identical to his last deal, with the years cut from 4 to 2. A very fair and sensible deal all the way around.

He has said that he's very interested in what Machado and Harper get. Maybe after they sign he'll be ready to seriously negotiate an extension that works for everyone. Kind of a Pollyanna take, I know, but it's possible.
