  1. Not necessarily. If John Henry approves signing Kimbrel for 4 years and 60 million and incurs all the extra tax etc., we're better off baseball-wise, he's worse off economically.
  2. The mega-deals actually have not increased quite as much as might have been expected, considering that it's been 18 years since A-Rod signed the groundbreaking 10 year/252 million deal with Texas. The highest now is Stanton's 325 million, but that's a 13-year deal. When some people were predicting Harper would get 400 million a while back, I was skeptical about it.
  3. I think you're mixing up the baseball risk and the economic risk a little here.
  4. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances. Step right up!
  5. Looks like we might find out if that's true this year.
  6. I'm not sure that applies to Varitek. It's my recollection that Boras was his agent and was looking for a laughably big deal because of Jason's reputation as the great game-caller, but no one was interested and he ended up returning to the Sox on a humblingly small deal.
  7. The bean counters and the stat geeks are all on the same page these days.
  8. Or not. Jeez, don't go all harmony on us. Make a guess!
  9. It's a great way to describe it.
  10. It was your post that made me think of them, so it must have been some sort of karmic thing.
  11. The surprising thing when I looked at his numbers is that his WHIP with Boston was virtually identical to his WHIP with Atlanta. The one thing that was significantly different was the HR rate - 0.4 with Atlanta and 0.8 with Boston.
  12. Petr Korda - pro tennis player Regina Rajchrtova (his wife) - pro tennis player Jessica Korda, Nelly Korda (their daughters) - LPGA golfers Genes are interesting things. Marry 2 tennis players and they produce 2 golfers!
  13. 'Throwing stuff at the wall', personified.
  14. In 2017 the Guardians were doing this with their best reliever, Andrew Miller in the role of 'relief ace', and Cody Allen in the role of closer. It worked well, but of course it only worked well because Miller and Allen were both at the top of their games.
  15. Statistically speaking, I think even the best relief pitchers in history are going to surrender a run in that scenario a certain % of the time. Just not sure what the % is...
  16. Take it here folks! https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/19025-The-future-of-baseball
  17. I think every team and every fan would be down with that.
  18. Bridge doesn't sound so bad compared to cliff.
  19. Well of course one possible explanation is that Dave is more interested in Kimbrel.
  20. Yes, the bridge to the closer keeps getting longer.
  21. I think Robertson's AAV is identical to his last deal, with the years cut from 4 to 2. A very fair and sensible deal all the way around.
  22. Kelly can't really complain about his deal, mind you, based on his numbers.
  23. It's the rise of the stat geeks in front offices.
  24. Look after yourself. Did you get the Red Sox 2018 deluxe World Series DVD set yet? Just got mine today.
  25. He has said that he's very interested in what Machado and Harper get. Maybe after they sign he'll be ready to seriously negotiate an extension that works for everyone. Kind of a Pollyanna take, I know, but it's possible.
