  1. Let's call it what it really is - tanking.
  2. The $2.5 million figure is the correct figure. The $300 K is full of crap. I worked it out myself. To pay $11,951,091 in tax we needed to be over by $42,481,746. $20,000,000 * 20% = $4,000,000 $20,000,000 * 32% = $6,400,000 $2,481,746 * 62.5% = $1,551,091
  3. Replacing Joe Kelly's 4.39 ERA is not such a big deal, is it? I thought you were an ERA guy.
  4. Do you, or does anyone here, have a link to the final, official calculation of our 2018 payroll for tax purposes?
  5. Settle down. As if Chavis was sure to give us the same results as a proven veteran like Pearce.
  6. It's only the thought I was referring to, not you.
  7. It's in the books, Kimmi. Your second sentence is a nasty and needless thought.
  8. But they did win the World Series, so, you know, I think I've seen worse mistakes.
  9. 2 years pre-arb + 2 years arb makes sense to me.
  10. Well, they do have a new manager.
  11. Well, hopefully this Harper/Machado shakeout is helpful to us in terms of being able to retain Mookie.
  12. The problem with the logic of waiting until the deadline, of course, is that it's 2/3 into the season and we're in the same division as the Yankees and it does make a big difference now to win the division.
  13. Of course there's a spending limit. Henry said not long ago that there are constraints. He said the constraints are not necessarily dictated by the tax, but by 'how much you're willing to lose'.
  14. I'm pretty sure DD does not have carte blanche.
  15. Right. The 'Roster Resource' numbers linked by Jacko have another number tossed in for 'estimated other players with non-guaranteed contracts', about 3.75 million. No idea exactly what it represents.
  16. You might say he has to 're-establish' after not pitching for 3 years.
  17. It sure gives up something to yack about the next month and a half.
  18. The deal kept Stanton around for a couple of years at a relatively cheap price before the sale took place. I thought it was actually kind of smart, in a sleazy way.
  19. Why so?
  20. Well, Jeff Loria's real plan was to sell the team and leave the Stanton issue for someone else.
  21. That's 100% correct. But this is the nature of thresholds and marginal tax rates. What is the incremental cost of the next addition?
  22. In the dark part of my mind I can't help thinking there's a panic option built in here somewhere too.
  23. And now he's got Brian Bannister, who seems to be gaining a reputation as quite the pitching guru, to go to work on these reclamation projects.
  24. The question is whether that decline in attendance is offset by the money pumped in by all the stay-at-home fans watching on their team's network, Extra Innings and MLB.TV.
  25. Maybe the success with Brasier convinced them they could turn sow's ears into silk purses.
