  1. The point is that we don't know whether a lot of the guys DD traded will become stars or not because it's too early to know. It's as simple as that.
  2. Nobody knows the game better than Belichick does, pretty hard to argue that.
  3. Nope, how they handle Spring Training next year won't prove a thing. How they handled Sale, Price and Porcello this year was strictly because of their 2018 postseason workloads. Obviously not an issue for next Spring Training.
  4. There are a lot of things you can look at. Kershaw started this season on the IL. What was his preparation compared to Sale's, Price's and Porcello's? Kershaw has his first start on April 15, pitches 7 innings of 2 run ball, and goes on to have the season you'd expect.
  5. No one knows for sure how much effect the spring preparation or lack thereof had. It's all strictly guesswork. That is a fact too.
  6. But as you pointed out many times, the big difference between our pitching and the Yankees was that they have a much better bullpen. I trust your position on that hasn't changed.
  7. For me the bottom line on this season was the horrendous starting pitching, which is indisputable.
  8. Anything that isn't hard cold fact can be disputed, you know that.
  9. I started with 1966 just to show the 2 years before 1968, the Year of the Pitcher. After 1968 they lowered the mound.
  10. 1966 3.99 1967 3.77 1968 3.42 1969 4.07 1970 4.34 1971 3.89 1972 3.69 1973 4.21 1974 4.12 1975 4.21 1976 3.99 1977 4.47 1978 4.10 1979 4.46 1980 4.29 1981 4.00 1982 4.30 1983 4.31 1984 4.26 1985 4.33 1986 4.41 1987 4.72 1988 4.14 1989 4.13 1990 4.26 1991 4.31 1992 4.12 1993 4.60 1994 4.92 1995 4.85 1996 5.04 1997 4.77 1998 4.79 1999 5.08 2000 5.14 2001 4.78 2002 4.62 2003 4.73 2004 4.81 2005 4.59 2006 4.86 2007 4.80 2008 4.65 2009 4.61 2010 4.38 2011 4.28 2012 4.32 2013 4.17 2014 4.07 2015 4.25 2016 4.48 2017 4.65 2018 4.45 2019 4.85
  11. Flags keep flying in the wind, though.
  12. Guys like Mike Shawaryn and Ryan Weber and Josh Smith have also made it to the bigs. It's not necessarily an indicator of success in itself.
  13. Mookie is certainly our best player right now. But in 5 years he might be a fading player still pulling down 35 million a year for 5 more years. These decisions aren't that simple.
  14. It does seem counter-intuitive. But the economics of major league baseball dictate some strange realities. Say Mookie comes to the Sox this offseason and says he'll agree to a 10 year contract (including 2020) for 350 million. Otherwise it's free agency. What would you do?
  15. That's impressive. But in the postseason things have been different. He has lost a number of games where the Dodgers scored 4 or more. Including Game 1 of last year's World Series.
  16. I think there's a difference between being progressive socially and being progressive technologically.
  17. Getting kind of technical there. You have to admit it was a stand pat team to start the year.
  18. I don't know, but if you really wanted to make a fun project out of it you could look at what the ChiSox got from the Cubs. Also, would I be a jerk if I pointed out that he didn't leave Chicago?
  19. There's nothing worse than a speculation stack.
  20. But Manny for Bay was basically a lateral move, prompted by Manny being a malcontent, not a baseball need to upgrade.
  21. Dombrowski was in a tough spot there. The rotation was depleted and the season threatening to fall apart. And Pomeranz was the best arm available at the time. Sometimes you get forced into an overpay. Just ask Theo, trading Torres for the Chapman rental.
  22. Standing pat, in itself, isn't a guarantee of failure. I keep bringing up 2007-08 as evidence of that.
  23. More trades like Sale? Not sure that was actually possible.
  24. I'm not sure if the Red Sox are ready to take that step, with such a nutso fanbase. I can see a woman as Assistant GM, one who has a serious role in roster construction.
