    Trading Betts would really grind the gears of a lot of fans. It's one of those things that changes history. It means that on the back of his baseball card there will always be another team besides Boston. I'll be very surprised if they do it. Not shocked though, I guess.

    I think the Red Sox are not only not trading Mookie, but are looking at his free agency the same way the Yanks looked at Cole. Do what it takes.

    Chapman did too. Yanks traded him to Cubs then signed him as free agent.

    Here's what it says in the CBA itself: (d) Player Option Years (i) If a Player fails to exercise or chooses to nullify a Player Option Year that is deemed a Guaranteed Year pursuant to Section E(5)(a)(ii) above, the difference between the amount paid to the Player under his Contract (including any Option Buyout pay- ment) and the amount that has been attributed to Actual Club Payroll of a Club under that Contract shall be added to (or subtracted from) Actual Club Payroll in the Contract Year in which the Player Option Year falls. If I'm reading that correctly, the Sox could indeed get stuck with a 5.25 million adjustment for JD if he opts out at the end of 2020. This makes sense, really, because it prevents teams from structuring contracts in a way that gives them tax relief.

    Chapman's situation was also different because he didn't opt out - he signed an extension before the opt out date.

    So if Jax is right, then the 23.75 million figure being used by Spotrac is based on the assumption that JD will opt out. The Sox would get stuck with a 1.75 mill AAV adjustment to his actual 2020 salary, but would get a free ride for 2018 and 2019.

    From what I've read they make what's called a 'true-up' adjustment if the player opts out. There was some stuff about this when Chapman opted out and then did a new deal.

    But that exemption would only benefit the rich teams like us that have issues with the tax because we spend so much.

    As I understand it, if JD opts out after this year, his AAV for 2020 will be adjusted to 27.25 million, because he will have been paid 71.25 million for the 3 years and his AAV for Years 1 and 2 was 22 million. 2018 22 2019 22 2020 27.25 Total 71.25 But there's no adjustment if the player doesn't opt out.

    Spotrac showing JD at 23.75 million doesn't do much for their credibility.

    What the hell, I say let's sign both Greg Bird and Clay Buchholz. Gotta have some sort of amusement. Like imagining Bird launching a few at Yankee Stadium for us.
