FORT MYERS, Fla. -- J.D. Martinez offered an interesting bit of information when appearing on OMF Thursday. Evidently, the Red Sox were prepared for the Astros' system of cheating heading into the 2018 playoffs. Appearing with Glenn Ordway, Lou Merloni and Christian Fauria at JetBlue Park, Martinez explained how he first heard about Houston's method of stealing signs from Mike Fiers via a text message and not his Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "You can put me on any lie detector. Alex Cora never influenced us and never told us about that thing," Martinez said. "The only way I ever found out was in the playoffs when Fiers, who is a very good friend of mine, he reached out to me and said, ‘Hey, make sure you’re doing this because this is what these guys are doing in the playoffs.’ I was like, ‘What?! How is this a thing?’ And then I mentioned it to Alex and he told me about the whole system and everything like that. That was why it was so crazy. He was so relaxed going into those playoff games because we we ready for it." In terms of carrying over any of the elements of the cheating system from Houston to Boston, Martinez said that never happened with Cora during the former manager's tenure with the Red Sox. "He was amazing at picking up things the right way," Martinez said of Cora. "These guys here, the guys that we have, they’re so good at every little thing. Any little hiccup they’ll find it. But you can put me on any detector you want, I’ll volunteer it. That never happened here." As for the current investigation of the Red Sox, the designated hitter is baffled by the insinuations. "It’s one of those things where I don’t understand it. I’ve talked and given my side of it, they heard me and I guess we’re just waiting to see what happens," he said.

I read today he's a free agent after this year, so that's out the window.

San Diego is sort of 'on the hook' with the tax number - but that's the only way they can unload half of Myers's contract. So they get a benefit from it as well. The Red Sox get a break on the tax number, but only by taking on half of Myers's contract. So I think it's a fair trade-off.

The AAV/tax quirks are the only reason this potential trade for Myers has any appeal to the Red Sox. It's just a slight variation on the standard salary dump concept.

It does seem strange that some of these things aren't addressed earlier than they are. With both Paxton and Severino. It's happened with Red Sox pitchers too of course.

If Manfred hammers the Sox because it's a 'second offense', he sets a clear precedent for the same thing to happen to the Yankees. And there's no way he can put a lid on this. Because the media love this story and there are obviously players and ex-players out there who are willing to talk about it.

So your belief is that if any Red Sox player used the replay room to try to decode signals, Manfred will crush the Red Sox for it and be completely oblivious to the possibility that another team did the same thing unless someone actually squeals on said other team?

I totally agree with your second paragraph. As for the Sox, though, by now Manfred must have the uncomfortable feeling that use of the replay room for decoding signals was epidemic. So if he comes down hard on them, what will he do when it emerges, as it very likely will, that they were only doing normal procedure and that it's him who really f***ed up with his lack of foresight? He will look like an all-time bozo.

There are no percentage or pro-rating calculations. The way it's done is actually pretty simple. The AAV is transferred to the team acquiring the contract. The actual salary being paid by the trading team is then subtracted. For the team who traded the player, the amount of salary they are paying is added to their tax number. So nobody gets off the hook. You can see this on Cot's with how Price shows on the Red Sox and Dodgers numbers for 2020.

And then there's Beltran. One of the Astros was quoted as saying that when Beltran joined the Stros in 2017 he told them the team was 'behind the times' on sign-stealing. This was after playing for the Yankees in 2014 to 2016. And then of course Beltran was hired by the Yankees as an adviser for the 2019 season. The stories that man could tell.

By Steve Adams | February 20, 2020 at 1:03pm CDT In yet another bit of troubling injury news for Yankees fans, manager Aaron Boone revealed Thursday that right-hander Luis Severino is experiencing forearm soreness that dates all the way back to his final ALCS appearance in 2019 (Twitter links via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch). Severino also has a loose body in his elbow, per Boone. He’ll be shut down for at least the next few days and will be examined by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad tomorrow. Asked if Severino would be ready for Opening Day, Boone could only reply, “We’ll see.”

Stanek was used as the Rays opener a lot, till they traded him off.

I suspect one of the reasons the Red Sox investigation is taking so long is that Manfred now knows this won't be the last one.
