  1. Cora used the fresher arm with Sale. Kimbrel had thrown 28 pitches in Game 3 and 28 in Game 4. He was throwing in the pen in case Sale got in trouble. That was just good management by Cora.
  2. Kimbrel was certainly not benched.
  3. For that matter, Mookie didn't do much in the 2018 postseason.
  4. Mainly, the payroll & tax problems meant they couldn't make acquisitions in the pitching dept. A lot of the guys from the 2018 team are making a lot more money in 2020 - Betts, Bogey, JBJ, Sale, E-Rod - because of the arb rules and the extensions. The 2018 team paid 20% tax and up. The 2020 team would pay 50% tax and up.
  5. That's true, but the 2020 team couldn't hope to duplicate that, for numerous reasons, starting with all the payroll and tax problems.
  6. Friedman departed after 2014, so that's 5 whole seasons he's been gone. It's the Rays success in 2018 and 2019 that Bloom has been a lot of the credit for.
  7. No, that was either jung, or me, I can't remember.
  8. It was an option, but it was a stupid one, arguably - to put out the same basic team as 2019, finish third again or worse, pay luxury tax, and lose Mookie for a 4th round pick.
  9. The rules (tax rates, free agent compensation) are also way different.
  10. God knows. Manfred is really starting to give off a clueless clown vibe. Calling the championship trophy a 'piece of metal' - nice job, Robbie boy!
  11. One thing about this that hasn't been talked about much is the impact of the new rules on compensation picks for losing a free agent. Getting nothing more than a 4th round pick for losing a player like Mookie is almost an insult. If the old rules were still in place they would have had more reason to keep him this year.
  12. Pedroia is just an example of the bad luck that can befall any team who signs a player to a long contract. And his contract was about one quarter of what Mookie wants.
  13. Larry doesn't watch games or read about the team - makes you wonder where he gets his info.
  14. From a philosophical perspective, and this is strictly a personal thing, I find talking about the prospects DD traded away gets a little tiresome eventually. There's nothing that can be changed about it, and not much that can be learned from it, and it's just not that interesting any more. We need to focus on what we do have and what Bloom can do for us.
  15. I'm in agreement on most of this.
  16. I'm confident that he did as well as he could have.
  17. A loss of fans isn't just bad for Henry, it's bad for the fans who are left. Decreased revenue could lead to further payroll cutting. The glory days of this franchise may be at an end.
  18. Fair enough. And if they had a chance to do it over they'd probably take it. I think fans need to be a little more forgiving with an ownership that has consistently invested in the team and brought success on the field.
  19. He didn't say it exactly that way. When he said we're cutting payroll in September, that was probably the most honest statement. And he got ridiculed for it, because supposedly it put the team at a serious disadvantage in negotiations. Subsequent statements were all pretty ambiguous. The message, as such, was that the primarily goal wasn't cutting payroll but being competitive. And they tried to explain that the competitive part included the future. It was a mess, I'm not denying that. I just don't think any particular approach would have gone over well. Red Sox fans in general don't like cutting payroll or trading a Mookie Betts no matter how you dress it up.
  20. The point is that Beeks isn't very good himself and not a good example of DD giving away starting pitching.
  21. How's he supposed to treat the ticket holders exactly?
  22. Ryan Weber has a better career FIP than Beeks.
  23. That's true. The fans are the ones who have the option of whether to be reasonable or not.
