  1. It's pretty simple and makes perfect sense, actually. We were benefitting from an AAV that was lower than JD's actual salary in 2018 and 2019. If he opts out we get stuck with an adjustment in the year he opts out. The only 'penalty' is in the luxury tax calculations, which of course are totally separate from the actual payroll.
  2. So Cot's has us at 16.4 million below the cap. However, there is one little issue - the JDM opt-out. I'm 99.99% sure that if JD opts out at the end of this year, we will get hit with an adjustment of 5.25 million, representing the difference between what he was actually paid by us over 3 years -23.75 * 3 = 71.25, and the original AAV of 22 * 3 = 66.
  3. Just trying to torment you a bit, Jax. You'd do the same for us.
  4. Those are fair comments. But the whole premise of being part of a 'team' or above the 'team' is shaky. We're talking about a hard cold business where players are constantly being traded, cut, left dangling in free agency et cetera. They're treated like commodities. As are general managers and managers who are being fired and replaced all the time. I'm not trying to sing the blues for the players here, I'm just talking about the realities of the 'team' concept.
  5. I know, that was awful.
  6. What does that mean, really? On the field he has always given it 100%. And apparently he also has strong leadership qualities, according to comments Alex Speier recently made on Twitter-Speier learned this when researching his book on the 2018 team. I do understand how you feel about Mookie's drive for the money, but I think as far as on the field goes, he is an exemplary team player.
  7. And Cole's numbers improved dramatically when he went from Pitt to Houston. Another interesting subplot to follow this season.
  8. I was a little surprised that Theo gave up on him so quickly and ate all that money, but I assumed he had his reasons.
  9. But in the '04 postseason he was rock solid and error-free for 14 games, and hit a little too.
  10. The hitting played into it too. I think it all started with the contract. 4 years for 40 million was a fair chunk in those days. Expectations were probably set a little high. I wasn't one of the people calling him Rent-a-Wreck. Just trying to explain it.
  11. Another thing with Renteria was that Cabrera played so well for us in '04 and people were puzzled that Theo didn't just re-sign him. Later came the stories about OCab's off-field antics.
  12. Probably because Nomar more than compensated with the stick...before 2004, that is.
  13. I think what killed Renteria with Sox fans was the errors.
  14. Great movie, great book.
  15. Trout is hardly the first star player whose marketability has been hurt by playing on crappy teams though?
  16. But on the flip side there's Clemens, and his 'remarkable career renaissance' after going to the Jays...
  17. Maris. The exploits of McGwire and Sosa, and then Bonds, became a bad joke in retrospect, when we knew they were juiced.
  18. You don't mess with the butterfly, though. I know this especially after reading Stephen King's 11-22-63...
  19. I think there would still be a pretty big issue with the home run record being made into a joke.
  20. Good one!
  21. Yeah, that's an easy call. Although, who knows if we would have won it all in 2013 and 2018 in that Wayback Machine scenario?
  22. I respect that view. I'm kind of an agnostic on the HOF stuff. Whoever gets in gets in. It's not my call.
  23. Yeah, I think around 1998 the juice became something really special.
  24. And will Cole be able to maintain the same spin rate after leaving Houston and their special sticky substances? (Yes, that might be developing as a thing now.)
