  1. And then a home run. Good thing we didn't trade him after that dismal start!
  2. No, deferred money deals like Sale's, Scherzer's and Strasburg's are totally legit. The players really are agreeing to substantial deferrals, and the present values are used for tax purposes.
  3. Agreed. And this would be a very obvious attempt.
  4. The Red Sox investigation is taking longer than the Astros. I think Manfred is losing it, basically.
  5. IMO the problem with the last CBA was the steeply accelerated tax rates and other penalties targeting the bigger spenders. If the rates and penalties didn't jump so drastically, re-setting would not be such a big thing.
  6. Bloom keeps things pretty quiet. And still a month to opening day.
  7. Bloom's got $16 mill to play with, Nick.
  8. It's a nice sound bite, but I'd like to hear what his actual proposals for change are. 'We really need to look at our CBA' doesn't say much, except... Maybe you should have looked at it before you signed it?
  9. Their SP certainly wasn't their strength last year.
  10. It's not really a question of how he's been 'treated', certainly not by the Red Sox. I just think it was questionable on MLB's part not to make some sort of 'grandfather clause' allowance in his case, when they closed their own loophole, the way it's generally done with governmental tax changes.
  11. German was not awesome last year, unless you look only at his W-L record and ignore everything else. FIP 4.72 fWAR 2.0 bWAR 1.8 He was better than average.
  12. I know, but do we now think Cashman and Boone are miracle workers who can overcome anything? I'm highly suspicious of how they achieved their offensive numbers with all the no-names last year. Apparently Judge is not exactly 100% either.
  13. 'Insanely reasonable' - I like that.
  14. Idiotic comment.
  15. Yes, you've said that many, many times. There are exceptions, though, Bogaerts for one.
  16. According to Mookie, when the Red Sox made their first extension offer a couple of years ago, for 8 years and 200 million, he was very tempted to take it, because it was such a huge amount of money. But his mother kind of talked him out of it, told him not to act rashly and emotionally etc. So it's actually all Mookie's mother's fault!
  17. Players hire agents and agents have incentive to get every last dollar. A % of it is theirs.
  18. Wins are wins, whether by scoring runs or preventing them. It's conceivable that our pitching is better than expected this year. The possibility exists.
  19. Can't say that for sure. What if we miss the playoffs by 3 games, and Betts has an 8 win season and Verdugo has a 2 win season?
  20. I do understand, up to a point, why they go for as much money as possible. I think a lot of it is male ego for sure. I think part of it is they don't want to be the guy who 'left money on the table'. It's almost a sign of weakness to do that.
  21. Castillo will have drained 72.7 million from the team coffers. Not much tax though, if any!
  22. Let's face it, the trade will be scrutinized by the hindsight jury all season.
  23. They actually only won 84 last year.
  24. Guaranteed. The only other remotely similar case I can think of is Kei Igawa. I think that was 'only' 24 million or so.
  25. To clarify: only two players with last name Eshelman in MLB history.
