  1. UZR is not a good measure for MIF, because the formula somewhat overrates arm strength, which is why i didn't cite UZR numbers for Peralta/Infante, even though over such a sample size, Peralta's numbers seem more legit. Dirks is a "body of work" case: He had a really bad overall defensive ranking prior to this year, and doesn't pass the eye test. Given the defensive statistics though, he's probably improved significantly, and is a lot better than we're giving him credit for.
  2. Then assume Torii Hunter plays all games and nothing happens. He's a below-average defensive OF right now per all accounts.
  3. What if Martinez gets injured during the ALCS? What if they grab a 2-0 lead, then have two righties one after the other (which Avila handles much better than lefties) and they sweep the series with him behind the plate? Nothing is a foregone conclusion,
  4. Torii Hunter is no longer an elite RF, he's a slightly below average OF, but their OF bench guys are natural RF's (which is why i said assorted RF's) combined for a -3.1 UZR this season. Don't be fooled by the name.
  5. I don't think Gomes/Nava would post nearly the same numbers overall (offense, defense, baserunning) but the difference is not enough to justify overpaying for Choo. If he's going to get a huge contract, he can get it elsewhere.
  6. He can catch. By definition, so could Napoli. That doesn't mean they should catch, for obvious reasons.
  7. I stand corrected on Martinez. One game? For further illustration, the Tigers has a -12.9 UZR this year to Boston's 21.6. UZR is not perfect, but the difference is undeniable.
  8. Infante is average, Fielder is below average, Cabrera is awful AND hobbled, Peralta is not a LF, their assorted RF's are below average, Avila can't throw runners out. Their defense may be worse than people make it out to be. For the record, the idea of Martinez catching right now is ludicrous. He has not caught a single game in more than two years.
  9. Yes he is, *insert oft-repeated idea about SS being a bot or a senile old man*
  10. Nah, i like Choo, but only at sensible money. If he wants more a 100 million contract he can go Choo himself.
  11. That's what i'm going for. My infamous reverse lock has paid dividends so far.
  12. Yeah that's homerrific.
  13. Then you can play the vastly superior JBJ at CF, and move Choo to LF. @sk: Good point, but you seem to forget about Gomes. All things considered, Bradley is unlikely to need a platoon partner if he gets his bearings. With the AL East being peppered with quality lefties though, that does bring Choo's value into question.
  14. But if Ellsbury leaves on a 110/120 million contract, you could move Victorino to center, Choo on right (provided he's significantly cheaper) and have a JBJ/Gomes platoon in left. You'd still be able to find enough AB's for Nava/Carp using that arrangement.
  15. Consistent and healthy. There's a reason why a significant part of the WAR calculation is based upon games played.
  16. Choo is a better overall player than Ellsbury, and it's not particularly close.
  17. What does that have to do with lowered velocity?
  18. None of them for strikes. Over-throwing. There's probably something there.
  19. Per Gameday, he's hit 96 all of once. For the record, Fangraphs has his average fastball velocity a tick down from last year, and on a decreasing trend since 2009.
  20. Comerica's pretty cool to catch a ballgame.
  21. Not as low as 91-92 though. He's usually topping out 94 the first few innings.
  22. Gray's losing it.
  23. Verlander's velocity is way down.
