    That wasn't responding to you. And in RF, he isn't. That's why he's part of the LF platoon. He also can't hit lefties, and most likely, JBJ will struggle with some of the tougher lefties. But it's the best available stat. He doesn't pass the eye test either, or the scouting report. Let's not kid ourselves, he's not adequate to play any games in RF, specially at Fenway. Notice how also most of the talk has been about getting a guy who can hit lefties well. That's because Nava can't hit lefties, Carp can't hit lefties, and JBJ is likely to have his share of struggles against them.

    I don't understand your assumption that this has anything to do with Nava. It doesn't.

    Pierre is terrible, and can't hit lefties. Cruz can't play a good RF, is old and is going to command a ton of money, not to mention that a platoon of Victorino and Bradley makes no sense. They'd be better off keeping Hassan a phone call away or signing an utility guy who can play some RF.

    The point is finding alternatives to ever playing Nava and his -14 UZR/150 in RF. Hassan is an alternative since he hits from the right side and can play all over the OF and 1B.

    Carp, Nava and Gomes can't play CF or RF. If Victorino is out and JBJ is struggling, you are screwed. The OF situation is very unbalanced.

    You are missing the fact that, as stated several times above, this is not about Nava. Nava platoons with Gomes and backs up at 1B. What you want is a guy who can back up CF and RF. There is no overlap.

    I believe so too. The problem is that he won't be better next year. There will be growing pains, and he will need to adjust. That's why you create depth.

    If BB-ref's formula had a better defensive component his WAR would be much lower, and that is the point. Absolutely no one here is advocating for Nava not to play. Nava is half of a platoon, and should play to his strengths, which are LF at Fenway and facing righties. The point here is that getting a guy who can play all over the OF in case of injury or ineffectiveness becomes more important with the departure of Ellsbury because of Victorino's age/injury history and JBJ being a rookie. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel here.

    I'm a big Bradley fan, but that doesn't preclude me from seeing the reality of our OF situation. Bradley may bomb, Victorino may miss time. The Sox got away with playing two halves of a clear platoon in the OF at the same time, and that's something they should try to avoid in 2014.

    You're missing the point. Nava is part of a platoon in LF. I'm not advocating for him not to play. I'm advocating for a backup who can play a decent CF as JBJ/injury insurance.

    5/100 would represent market value in terms of dollars, but not years.

    Because Nava was forced to play so many games out of position last year in a season that we had a proven commodity in CF and Victorino in RF, with JBJ replacing Ellsbury and Vic a year older, a capable replacement becomes all the more important.

    I would have no problem with the Sox going right around 100 million for Lester as long as they keep the contract to five years or less. If you have to overpay to keep the guy on a shorter contract, then do it.

    Actually the stats measure it perfectly. The numbers are there for all to see.

    The Sox and Lester will find middle ground on a contract that's less than six years long, and for market value, unless he stinks up the joint in 2014. You can continue this exercise in mental masturbation regarding the possibility of the Sox losing him if you want. The truth is that if they want to keep him, they will, unless he wants to leave, and for all intents and purposes, he does not.

    Juan Pierre would be a terrible counterpart to JBJ. He can't play center adequately anymore, can't get on base, can't hit for power, and can't hit lefties. You need a guy who can spell JBJ against the tougher lefties, and who can man CF (or RF) for a significant stretch as a contingency plan for injury/ineffectiveness. Juan Pierre is not that guy. Character means little if you're sucking.

    No it won't. If Cecchini keeps developing, they will find a spot for him on the lineup. He projects as a below-average 3B so they'll likely move him off the position anyway. Where do you come up with this stuff?

    If they sign Drew for a year, how is Cecchini blocked? That makes zero sense.

    And they start throwing breaking pitches in their teens, without fully developed elbow/shoulder muscles. This is a theory I've always subscribed to.

    Cecchini hasn't had a single MLB plate appearance. Hold off on the accolades just a wee bit.
