  1. That's because what you just stated above is common sense, and some posters here have declared war on common sense.
  2. ^I laughed at this way more than i should have.
  3. The Varitek/Drew comparison is downright idiotic. Please stop. Farrell likes Drew because he is a good player that should be even better the coming season if he can get through it without concussions. Depth is not a bad thing. I like WMB and XB, but XB is a rookie and WMB is coming off a season in which he struggled mightily. How can having flexibility and a fall-back plan a bad thing?
  4. Drew can hit righties very well, and is excellent defensively. Who says he won't be platooned by Farrell? Are you in Farrell's head? You're clearly making this up. By all accounts the Red Sox should be more than able to play them however they see fit once the roster is completed. Stop making these unsupported assumptions.
  5. No, there is no similarity. They're both banging reporters, but Lowe was married, and WMB is single. Your point makes zero sense in regards to the comparison. Think about it.
  6. Denorfia plays for the Padres.
  7. You just proved in your own post that the Lowe situation is in no way, shape or form similar to the WMB one. Wat?
  8. Why would ownership care who WMB is banging?
  9. I'll take Peavy and Drew over Peavy and Dempster.
  10. Peavy's a stiff? News to me. Otherwise spot on post Spudboy. What SoxSport and some others seem to be conveniently forgetting and besides what Palodios just mentioned (which is very accurate mind you) is that this team just lost a lost of offensive talent. Bringing back Drew would help them maximize their offense, not the other way around. WMB would get enough AB's anyway. If he's hitting, he will fit into the lineup. In the meantime, by signing Drew, you increase your offensive depth and protect your team against injury. SoxSport's position seems to be based a lot more on a dislike for Boras than what's logically beneficial for the team, and that's just not very smart.
  11. That's a very interesting read. Even more so because at first glance, it would seem that compiling a collection of FB hitters playing at the Coliseum for half their games would be a recipe for disaster, but Billy Beane knows what he's doing.
  12. Carp (who i like but is Nava light, and is below average defensively everywhere he plays), add a guy like Chris Denorfia/Justin Ruggiano and call it an off-season.
  13. Are you seriously comparing Stephen Drew to an over-the-hill Jason Varitek Fred? LMAO.
  14. It could be worse. We could have A-Rod.
  15. As we all should be.
  16. Bradley had less than 120 Pa's at the ML level. That's indicative of nothing. Nava didn't improve at all in RF last year, since his -14.0 UZR/150 was unsightly. You are missing the point. It's not about getting someone who can "hit lefties". It's about insurance for JBJ and Victorino, who is often injured. The ability to hit lefties should be required for practical purposes. There is no "vast improvement" here, albeit no Drew/Salty should help. What i find hilarious is that you essentially created an argument out of thin air though. On Davis, they already have a backup earning 5 mill, would they have signed another one, who's also defensively challenged? I get the Carp love, i really do, but he's essentially the same player as Nava with a little less OBP and more power.
  17. Seth Smith is displacing someone.
  18. This makes about as much sense as a dog piloting a space shuttle.
  19. You're joking right?
  20. To further illustrate the point my erudite friend is challenging me on, here's how the advanced metrics profiled Nava's work against lefties last season: OPS: .647, ISO: .084 (!), wOBA: .288, wRC+: 75 (!). All of this with a slightly above-average .315 BABIP. All of those (except, ironically, his BABIP numbers) are below league average. But hey, i just pull this s*** out of my ass! Tell me again how Nava is anything but awful against lefties. That's why Gomes was brought in as the other half of the left-field platoon. Is any more research needed?
  21. You're the one who's clearly "talking out his ass". Do you know what OPS is? Because a .660 OPS is right around replacement level, in other words, pure suck. .310 OBP and sub .400 slugging? Pass. Comparing Choo to Nava is laughable at best btw. Also, you clearly haven't read what i've written. I am not advocating for anyone to replace Nava. I'm saying they need a backup guy who can hit lefties in case JBJ struggles and Victorino gets injured. And because he can't hit righties, is why he would be deployed in a bench role or platoon situation. Let me say this again in slowly digestible bits: Nava is part of the LF platoon. Getting someone to back up CF-RF has nothing to do with Nava playing, since he's one of the best bats we have against righties. Learn to read.
  22. DeJesus-type numbers with upper-echelon CF defense constitutes a four-win player at least. That would match, if not exceed, what Ellsbury is likely to do from here on out. Sign me up please.
  23. The Red Sox won 97 games in spite of having to use their platoon as regulars for a significant portion of the season. They managed to overcome this problem by having the best offense and one of the best rotations in baseball. The problem that you and others seem to be ignoring, is that the Sox will very likely have a downgraded offense for next season. Ellsbury is gone, Salty (lucky season aside) is gone, Napoli is unlikely to repeat his BABIP luck, Victorino is an injury risk, Ortiz is a year older, and both JBJ and XB are rookies who will have their ups and downs. Because the lineup last year was much more established and you had a lot more pieces to pick up the slack, you could get away with having one of the worst OF defenses in the Majors when both Nava and Gomes played, as well as having three lineup members (Nava, Drew, Salty) who were completely and utterly unable to avoid making outs against left handed pitching. Next year, the Red Sox won't have such a luxury, and that's why what some view as "merely depth" will become "they should have addressed this in the off-season" as soon as Murphy's Law strikes during the 2014 season. We have beaten this subject to death, however, so let's just agree to disagree. I say they should be guarded with another OF guy who can handle the stick against lefties (like Chris Denorfia) you say they don't.
  24. Fedor fans masturbating at the thought of using Silva's consecutive losses as proof of their "FEDOR WAS THE BEST EVAH" campaign. SMH.
