  1. Hasn't that been my point all along? I've said like five times that Lester might get the crazy contract, but not from the Red Sox. I literally said just that in the post you initally quoted.
  2. 5/25 is 125 million. Lester's not getting seven years, and he probably won't get a 25 AAV either. You pulled that 170 million number out of thin air. That's not Lester's market.
  3. Because ERA isn't the only comparable between pitchers, and Lester's peripherals were trending South for years before last year. He's still a fringe #1, but he's not an elite guy that should be making 25+ per year. Greinke's contract was stupid too by the way. Also, i don't think you understand exactly what i mean: I'm saying Lester might just get a stupid contract, but that he won't do it here.
  4. I don't understand what you're getting at here. Last year doesn't even sniff Lester's best three years overall.
  5. 5/25 is 125 million, which in itself is an overpay, but doesn't touch the 140-160 million madness some are expecting here.
  6. You're taking it out of context. 5/100 for Lester would be a big FA contract. The extension for Pedroia was a big contract. We've gotten so caught up in the MLB gold rush that we've forgotten that 5 years at close to 20 million dollars is still a significant commitment.
  7. 140 million is not market value for Lester. 5/100 is market value for Lester. You are placing him in a tier he doesn't belong to. What you are asking is for the Sox to massively overpay for a pitcher, fully knowing that those are the kinds of contracts most likely to fail. You can't ask for the FO to play it smart then ask for them to break their own rules and overpay for Lester masquerading it as "market value". Can't have it both ways. They either execute their plan to avoid large long-term contracts or go balls to the wall so they can find themselves in a Yankees-like situation.
  8. That's because generally speaking, paying "market value" for long-term contracts usually results in an albatross for the team, as has been proven over and over and over and over again. The 70 million starting offer was low, but it was an initial offer, and what is "market value" for Lester? He's not an undisputed ace or #1. Let them work it out. As for Lackey, seriously? He repaired his image last year. It's a ploy to get more money, nothing else. That public image BS means crap if they're making their dough.
  9. You really think he's going to retire and miss out on the chance for another payday? And since when doesn't the team pay market value? You're being ridiculous.
  10. They have an option on Lackey, why would they let him go? When and where has it been indicated that he'll be allowed to leave/traded? You;'re mired in a case of Fred-induced paranoia. Unless the team absolutely tanks, Lackey is going nowhere. As for Lester, we have no idea what will end up happening with him, but if someone ends up paying stupid money, good riddance. My gripe with Fred is that he keeps pretending that he both knows better than Cherington and that he knows how negotiations are being conducted. He knows neither, just like the rest of us. Stop the conspiracy theories.
  11. I don't understand what you're implying here, i understand the post, but i don't understand how it relates to what i was saying.
  12. Lackey is under contract for 2015. They are negotiating with Lester. You come up here typing all of your rage-induced posts while either a) ignoring plain-to-see information, or b ) making terrible assumptions about a process you have no information or inside knowledge about. The implication that Cherington doesn't understand what he's dealing with but you do is laughable. Get over yourself Fred.
  13. I stream. Both leagues i play in allow a set number of moves/starts per week though. What's the big deal? Bellhorn, how does that cut into your time? It literally takes three minutes to pick a pitcher with a good matchup from the waiver wire.
  14. Jesus Christ, Ortiz is just scalding hot.
  15. And just like that, Doubront has entered suck mode.
  16. You can't stop pitching to Ortiz, because then Napoli is sure to punish you, as opposing teams so often learned last season.
  17. It means that "clutch" is mostly really a myth save for some outliers, and baseball-reference.com.
  18. Because of what i said above, and it's what i like to call "Javier Vasquez syndrome". A pitcher with the ability to K guys, and be stingy with walks and hits, but just gives up so many XBH (in Hughes' case because of FB tendencies) that it negates any other statistical positives he may have.
  19. This is one of the rare occurrences where i agree with a700. My dad's older than both of you and he's not an "advanced metrics" guy, but he understands OBP and OPS and how getting on base correlates with run production. All of his old-timey friends also follow along the same line of thought.
  20. I think OBP has gained a bit more traction, but WHIP is not far behind.
  21. The difference between WHIP and OBP is that WHIP doesn't necessarily convey a pitcher's effectiveness by itself. There are pitchers who have a decent career WHIP, but have unsightly ERA's. This happens because WHIP does not distinguish between kinds of hits. A pitcher that doesn't give up walks or a lot of singles but gives up an above average amount of bombs and XBH is not necessarily effective.
  22. Rodriguez does not have an OPS below .869 in any pressure situation over his career. The fallacy of clutch persists. His failures over a couple of AB's during the postseason (and cheating) ended up defining his career. The funny thing is that Captain Amazing was also pretty terrible in several of those postseason series, but he can do no wrong.
  23. Hopping on Koopas is gay, silver sword is badass. Case closed.
  24. Well if you were MegaMan X and you had a plasma cannon in your right arm and nothing on your left one, then we could talk. But you don't have a plasma cannon, so don't you talk to me.
