Rumor: Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox?
win red sox replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
Cease was traded for the #85 prospect, the number 7 and 8 in in padres system and a reliever. I might be out of pocket here but Mayer would be be a significant overpay. Trading Mayer to me would be a mistake unless it was for a Sale type pitcher. What's the odds of Story missing significant time? If he does play most of the season is his contract moveable next off-season? As for a trade package for Crochet I would draw the line at: mlb #95 Arias system #8 Bleis system #11 Sandlin system #12 Fitts -

Penalties for signing players who reject their QO Any team that signs a player who has rejected a qualifying offer is subject to the loss of one or more Draft picks. However, a team's highest first-round pick is exempt from forfeiture. (Players who are unsigned after the start of the MLB Draft in the year that follows the rejection of their qualifying offer are no longer tied to Draft pick compensation and can be signed without their new club needing to forfeit a Draft pick.) Three tiers of Draft pick forfeiture -- based on the financial status of the signing team -- are in place to serve as a penalty for signing a player who rejected a qualifying offer: • Competitive Balance Tax payors: A team that exceeded the CBT threshold in the preceding season will lose its second- and fifth-highest selections in the following year's Draft, as well as $1 million from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If such a team signs multiple qualifying-offer free agents, it will forfeit its third- and sixth-highest picks as well. • Revenue-sharing recipients: A team that receives revenue-sharing money will lose its third-highest selection in the following year's Draft. If it signs two such players, it will also forfeit its fourth-highest pick. • All other teams: If a team does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the CBT salary threshold in the previous season, it will lose its second-highest selection in the following year's Draft, as well as $500,000 from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If one of these teams signs two such players, it will also forfeit its third-highest pick. (Note: Each pick in the first 10 rounds of the Draft has an assigned value, and the total for each of a club's selections equals what it can spend on signing bonuses for players selected in those rounds without incurring a penalty. When a team forfeits a Draft pick, it also surrenders the accompanying bonus pool money associated that pick, independent from any money forfeited from its international bonus pool per the rules below.) -

Seems reasonable SP 1 Flaherty (4x24) or Kikuchi (2x24) RP 1 Scott (4x17) or Hoffman (3x15) RP 2 Estevez (3x10) or Treinen (1x10) RP 3 Martin (1x8) or RHB Grichuck (1x5) -
A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part I

One of the easiest ways to upgrade the pitching would be to sign a catcher that can actually catch. Carson Kelly on a 3 year deal would be ideal, solid defense and hits lhp. Another option could be D'arnaud on a 1 year deal. I don't think alot people understand how bad Wong is at catching specifically at framing and blocking. -
Conforto is better on defense, but both are well below average outfielders and should be full time dh's. The thumb injury and shoulder injury obviously dragged down Yoshida's overall numbers, but even then from 6/24 he lead the Sox in wRC+ 132 with .369 obp. In that same time span he put up a 1.2 fwar. I guess the Giants could resign Conforto and hope he improves on his .309 obp and turns around his subpar defense. And the Sox would probably pass on this trade as Ray has only pitched 34 innings the last 2 years and while Doval was once a high leverage reliever those days appear to be gone due to a 6.0 bb/9.

This is my bad, for some reason i thought the Yankees offer was loaded with deferrals. But i'm pretty sure the padres offer was over 400m. -

These aren't the George Steinbrenner Yankees, for context the Giants offered Judge a bigger contract but he wanted to stay home. The Yankees were outbid. Soto is Boras's agent, I would assume he goes to the team that offers the best contract. -

I'm sure your right, the Sox shouldn't bid on players that the yankees are interested in. Looking at the Yankee contract commitments next year is around 255m and they would need to fill first base if they decline Rizzo's 17m option, they would have to replace gleyber torres at second base. Judge is not acenterfielder and it showed this year -9.9 defensive fwar this this year which was the worse for qualified center fielders. Jason Dominguez is the 14th ranked prospect in baseball and is ready for a starting role next year and he's also better suited as a corner outfielder. And just eyeing tax implications on Soto's contract if he signed a 50 million a year contract it would cost the yankees and additional 35m a year as 3rd time offenders. These are the reasons why I think the Sox could be competitive in what the offer Soto. -

I think it all comes down to Soto. If the Sox sign Soto to something like 12/540 then I would assume they would blow by the first threshold as there is no real punishment besides the 20% tax on the overage. Signing Soto would mean they are all in and could lead to a Kikuchi signing 2/40, and high leverage relievers like Hoffman 2/30, Estevez 2/20. Soto in LF could also open the doors in moving your excess OF for pitching. If they don't sign Soto I would assume they stay around the 220 mark. This would be a shame as you have Casas, Duran, and Devers in there prime and elite talent coming up this year. I think the days of elite talent becoming free agents are going to become extremely rare. I also think the talk about the lineup and talent coming through is too left handed is overblown, all you need is 4 right handed hitters to balance the lineup and the Sox have that. -
Yoshida -23.7 for Ray -34.2 and Doval 11.5 could make sense for both teams. Conforto is a free agent and Yoshida would be an upgrade. Theres not many bats on the free agent market better the Yoshida and would also free up some cash the next 2 years for the Giants. Ray has missed significant time the last 2 years, but in limited innings this year the velocity was good and K/9 were 12.62, could be Chris Sale situation. Doval had a down year but K/9 was 11.90 and GB 60%.

Per BTV, if the sox took on Trout's contract then the angels would have to take on Yoshida's and Story's contract plus 50 million. I would do it, if you could convince Trout to DH. -
Since 6/24 (10 days after coming back from thumb injury) Yoshida hada wRC+ of 132, which lead the team. If he's platooned correctly with Refsnyder then your getting pretty good production out of the DH spot. The numbers are actually pretty impressive considering it sounds like he's going to have shoulder injury this offseason.

Seems right, but I don't think it's a given that Rafeala has secured a starting role. It will be interesting if Grissom starts off solid and they need to find a spot for Campbell, which the easiest position to slot him in is LF.
-
The Sox have no need for one of the best hitter's baseball? Do you honestly believe that the Sox are going to give a long term contract to a free agent pitcher?
-
I admit its hard to see with how Boston has handled free agency recently, But Soto is probably going to be the biggest free agent in recent memory. Boston has positioned themselves in the best situation to sign him compared to any other team in the league. Duran and Abreu wont stop you from signing a generational talent that's just entering his prime. You could move both for pitching and run with a OF of LF Soto, CF Campbell, RF Anthony with Rafeala a super sub.
-
Just a few things I think will happen this off season. O'Neill and Pivetta will be extended the qualifying offer. Both will decline. The Red Sox will be in on Soto. A lot of noise ref the New York teams are the likely suitors, but both are in the highest tax bracket and would cost significantly more than a Red Sox offer. Abreu will be moved for young pitching, along the lines of Ashcraft and Harrington from Pittsburgh. The Red Sox will stay away from the long term contracts for pitchers. I could see Yoshida getting traded, he's has an ops of 849 since june 24th(10 games after coming off the IL), the talk about his contract being a sunk cost is overblown. I could see one of the west coast teams(Giants, Mariners, Angels) in on him. Don't see Mayer getting traded, just because it seems likely that Story will miss a significant amount of time and there is no other shortstop on the roster or upper minors.

solid start by Webster, slider was filthy.

The Jon Lester contract situation
win red sox replied to jacksonianmarch's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
why does people assume that they could have locked him up on 4-5 year deal in the spring? He stated he wanted to retire as a member of the red sox, to me that says 6-7 year contract. -
JBJ just smoked a 97 mph fastball, but he has a slow bat. Since 6/19 300/347/357.
-
Because I guess Lester and Lackey are probably your best trade assets and due to lack of power at the major and minor league level trading one or both of them is their best chance to secure a power bat. Just a hunch, but I think the discount that Lester was offering is gone and I doubt 5/120 gets it done. It will be pretty interesting to see if the Sox stick to their guns in reference to signing long term extensions to players over 30.
-
@nickcafardo 35m The Red Sox were one of a few teams to watch Cole Hamels earlier this week. Hamels has four years remaining on his contract makes sense, it would allow them to move Lester and/or Lackey for offense.
