That's awesome, trade our top 4 prospect's for Matt Garza and Soriano. Let me see here, 1) WMB is on track to be the starting 3rd basemen in 2013 and is our #1 prospect 2) Lavernaway has crazy offense potential and will be a major contributor in 2013 and he's rated the number 6 prospect 3) Ranaudo projects as a middle of rotation starter and is our #3 prospect 4) Bogart's has the most upside of any of our prospects and is rated number 4. Soriano is garbage, even if he was a free agent I wouldn't sign him for more 2/8. Realize this, Boston is trying to fill the backend of the rotation. You don't trade your entire farm system to fill the backend of the rotation.

#Royals #Braves and #RedSox discussing 3 team deal. Soria to Sox, Jurrjens to Royals, Cain, Scutaro + to Atlanta. https://twitter.com/#!/PioDeportes1 http://buzztap.com/link.jsp?id=7008587&cid=104 This is kind of interesting, who would play shortstop? a trade for Hanley in the mix?

White Sox, John Danks Agree To Extension By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 21 at 7:52pm CST] Despite many rumors to the contrary, John Danks isn’t going anywhere. The White Sox have agreed to sign the left-hander to a five-year, $65MM contract extension. The news won't be announced before next week, since Danks has to take a physical for the move to become official. Danks would have been eligible for free agency following the 2012 season, his final year as an arbitration eligible player. Matt Swartz projected a 2012 salary of $7.6MM for the 26-year-old CAA client, who earned $6MM in 2011. That means the White Sox are paying $14-15MM for each of the four free agent seasons the deal buys out (Danks' age 28-31 seasons). Jered Weaver's recent $85MM extension also covered one arbitration season and four free agent years. However, Weaver has superior career stats, was headed for a massive reward through arbitration and has finished in the top five in AL Cy Young balloting in both of the past two seasons. Weaver's deal was definitely out of reach for Danks and agent Jeff Berry. Another comparable pitcher, Chad Billingsley, signed a three-year extension worth $35MM this spring. His deal covers his final season of arbitration eligibility and his first two seasons of free agency, which means Danks obtained two more years of security. However, Billingsley signed his deal (it's a team-friendly one) two full seasons before free agent eligibility, while Danks was just one season away from the open market. Danks and Billingsley are similar pitchers who have been compared to one another for years through the arbitration process. Danks posted a 4.33 ERA with 7.1 K/9, 2.4 BB/9 and a 43.8% ground ball rate in 170 1/3 innings for the White Sox this past season. Only 16 pitchers in baseball have produced more wins above replacement since 2008 (15.6). Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported the news (Twitter links). Doug Seyller reported the agreement on Twitter earlier today and appears to have broken the story

agreed, I rather actually pay a 1 year overpay for Ortiz for 15 million than 2 years at 24 million and losing the flexibility. Offering arb to Ortiz was a disaster for the Red Sox, with that 15 million you could have gotten a Madson and maybe Cody Ross to platoon in RF. Anyways, I assume that Ben has a plan and does not want to sign any Multiyear contracts or give any top prospects away. Ellsbury's contract extension is looming and wouldn't be suprised if it's the largest contract ever given out to a OF.

2012 offseason will be very interesting for the sox, due to money coming off the books and the potential of 4-5 cost controlled players in starting positions in 2013. I'll be keeping a close eye on Iglesias, Wmb, Kalish, Lavernaway and Ranaudo in the minors this year as their devolopment will be crucial to the Red Sox future. And with Youkilis, Dice-k, Scutaro, Ortiz, and Jenks all coming off the books 2013 should be a huge offseason. Maybe in play for Cain or Hamels and still come in under the Luxury tax.

With the red sox current salary constraints and lack of pitching depth, the most logical move would be to trade Beckett, Since the Marlins missed out on Wilson and the whole Hanley situation developed they make good trade partners. Beckett for Ramirez, and then spin Ramirez off to Atlanta or Seattle. I imagine you could get Jurrjens and Minor for Ramirez and possible Kalish. That frees up around 15 million which get you a closer and more bullpen depth. Why do the Marlins do this? The Marlins now get a number 2 pitcher and puts fans in the seats and maybe sign Aramis Ramirez. Why do the Braves do this? Atlanta's collapse last year was mostly due to there offense and they have a hole at shortstop and a surplus of young pitching. The biggest hurdle to this scenario would be if Atlanta would be able to take on Hanley's salary 3/47 and there is history with Hanley and Atlanta's manager. What do you think?

if it goes to arb the contract is not guaranteed, i think they could cut him and be on the hook for 1/6 of the contract, which if he signs for 15 million would be just over 2 million.
-
in reference to ortiz accepting arb, does this mean signing varitek to back up salty? I don't see Lavernaway catching once every 4-5 days and since there is no DH ab's his hitting and catching development will be stalled. Back to AAA or a trade chip.
-
I think offering arb backfired on the FO, now it appears they have around 10 million to fill all the holes after signing Ortiz, I would go ahead and let it go to arbitration and give him his 15 million and consider it a lesson learned. Now it appears we'll be scratching the bottom of the barrel for 2 starters, bullpen help, rt handed of, not to mention this means Lavernway will be sent to AAA. It appears this FO is willing to take a step back this year(another bridge year) and start focusing on next years offseason. What a disaster!!!!
-
Looking at next years salary's it doesn't appear there is going to be much salary relief as it appears like the FO is looking to sign Ortiz to a 2 year contract(which is a nightmare), and the only contracts coming off the books are Scutaro,Jenks, and Dice K(around 22 million). I pray Ortiz declines arb and signs with any team outside of the AL east. I really would like to see Beckett moved for prospects and then flipped for Gio,Jair, or Garza. Ellsbury's extension is looming and I'm assuming Crawford contract would just be a starting point if he duplicates last years numbers. So many holes to fill and with the FO being adamant about staying below the cap, it only makes sense to let Ortiz walk and move Beckett.

Under the new CBA, teams that sign the remaining Type A relievers will not be forced to surrender draft picks, a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The teams that sign those relievers and certain other Type A free agents will not forfeit draft picks but the teams that lose those players will still receive compensatory picks (from Twitter). This means teams can sign Ryan Madson, Francisco Rodriguez, Heath Bell, and other top relievers this offseason without penalty. The measure is not retroactive, however, meaning that the Phillies will still surrender their first-round pick for signing Jonathan Papelbon. For a full list of this offseason's free agents, including their Type A/B designation, check out MLBTR's free agent tracker. Furthermore, the new CBA will do away with the Elias rankings altogether starting next season, Rosenthal tweets. Under the new system, the top free agents will be subject to compensation if teams make them qualifying offers north of $12MM. it looks like the only good thing about the phillies signing papelbon was they did it early in the process

agreed.

If they were average pitchers with average stuff I would see your point, but both have plus stuff. And if your uncomfortable with both of them in the rotation they could always put Sale in a setup role. When was the last time the sox had a reliable lefty out of the bullpen? I guess Wagner.

Rather see Ellsbury and Reddick for: John Danks,Chris Sale and Carlos Quentin.

The Sox need to overhaul there pitching staff and at this point I don't think free agency is the route to go. Right now they have 2 spots open and a potential third with the whole Beckett fiasco. The Sox are going to have give up some offense to resolve these issues. Youkilis does have trade value, even though hes broken down the last 2 years. Youkilis cannot hold up at 3rd base, so now your looking at DH. Who's bat would you rather have Ortiz or Youkilis? Ortiz is a free agent which obviously has no trade value. There are few positional players on the Sox that have high trade value and I would imagine that Youkilis and Ellsbury would bring in 2-3 top of the end rotation pitchers.
-
I don't know if Oakland knows what it's doing this offseason, well until there stadium issue is resolved. Hopefully, Beane still has the hots for Youkilis. So maybe, Youkilis and Raunado plus cash gets it's done.
-
I agree with overhaul of the pitching staff as this was the reason for the collapse, and hopefully there willing to spend some money, but with Gonzalez and Crawford's salary bumping up to 20 million and eating Lackey's contract they will have to be creative.
-
Like the addition of Cain, I would imagine the first names the Giants would bring up is Middlebrooks and Ranaudo and probaly more. In reference to Darvish, I really don't see the Sox increasing payroll.

This Roster needs to be overhauled not just because of the collapse, but also due to the lack of professionalism. I would call Texas and see about trading Beckett for Ogando straight up, Becket is a bad seed and never has had back to back no 1 starter seasons. Ogando is young and could start or pitch out of the bullpen. It also appears the Rangers will not be resigning Wilson so Beckett could fit in the rotation. Next I would call San Diego and Send Lackey,Lowrie and 30 Million for Headley and Gregerson. San Diego paid 5 million this year for Garland not to pitch and plus Lackey's numbers shop improve significantly at Petco. In Lowrie the get an infielder who can play both corner and middle infield positions and has upside. The Sox get rid of Lackey, get a 3rd basemen with a 381 obp, a middle reliever with a career 3.10 era. Next I would call Cincinnati and send Youkilis and Doubrant for Volquez. It appears Cincinnati is shopping Votto, and Rolen spends more time on the DL than on the field, plus Doubrant gives them a left handed pitcher out of the pen with decent upside(he is out of options). Volquez has tremendous upside, he's almost 2 years removed from TJ surgery so his numbers this year are inflated, but he has top of the rotation stuff. Next comes the hard part, I would call Chicago and send Ellsbury and Reddick for Quentin,Danks and Sale. Chicago gets one of the best all around players in the league in his prime and young corner outfielder who has upside. Boston gets the power right handed bat they need, plus 2 pitchers with plus stuff. Sale pitched out of the bullpen this year, but recently was interviewed and stated he wants to start, he has number 1 stuff. When it comes to Ellsbury, Boston is not going to pay 2 of's 20 million a year. I would then sign Ramon Santiago as my utility infielder and Coco Crisp as my 4th outfielder. When it comes to Paps I would offer 3/36 and Papi 1/10 with an option. If either one declines, offer arb, get the draft picks and move on. There are plenty closers on the market and you could sign Cuddyer or Willingham to replace Papi. Starters 1. Lester 2. Bucholz 3. Danks 4. Volquez 5. Ogando Bullpen Papelbon Bard Morales Ogando Gregerson Aceves Sale 1. Scutaro SS 2. Crawford LF 3. Pedroia 2b 4. Gonzalez 1b 5. Quentin rf 6. Papi dh 7. Headley 3b 8. Salty 9. Kalish Reserves Crisp Santiago Lavernawy Mcdonald Getting one starter is not going to help this team, the pitching staff needs to be overhauled with youth, not worried about the offense at all as you can see the balance of right left. Quentin would put up astronimical numbers in this lineup and this park, although his defense will probaly be substandard. You gotta think that Crawford will bounce back.
