Red Sox signed Giolito for 38m/2 years and that was their “big signing” last offseason. Of course he didn’t pitch a single inning for us last year. His deal might as well have read 38m for 1 year of play. This is how the Sox burn 🔥 good money in their dumpster diving for injured players. It’s insane to me that they repeat this behavior with Sandoval who likely will miss most of 2025 recovering from TJ surgery.

It's not a mirror though. Yankees signed Max Fried for $218 million dollars. Fried is a stud top of the rotation pitcher. Red Sox signed Aroldis Chapman for 10.75m 1 year deal. Chapman is a 36 yo relief pitcher. Yankees are coming off being in the World Series. Red Sox are coming off missing the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row. The Yankees didn't give up a single top 100 prospect to acquire Devin Williams. The Red Sox gave up the 25th overall prospect in MLB in Teel. The needs of a stacked World Series team are different than one who needs a serious talent boost to even hope to get into the postseason. Either way the Red Sox moves so far have been underwhelming and not without risk. Crochet could become a top 3 pitcher, but can he hold up to a top of rotation workload? He's never pitched more than 150 IP in a season yet. The rest of their moves have been fliers on low cost low risk acquisitions like Chapman or injured reclamation projects like Sandoval. Outside of the Crochet trade the Red Sox have been dumpster diving, flea market shopping if we're being realistic.

Ok I do have to push back here. A trade for a JP pitcher does not count as a posting signing. And that is the context of this thread, will Red Sox go after prominent postings from JP such as Sasaki. Naoyuki Uwasawa traded to Red Sox from Rays for cash Associated Press Mar 28, 2024, 01:32 PM ET ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Reliever Naoyuki Uwasawa was traded to the Boston Red Sox from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash. Boston selected the contract of Uwasawa to the 40-man roster before Thursday's opener at Tampa Bay, then optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.

Ok. You found a japanese pitcher after Uehara. But it was also only a 3m dollar deal. I'm talking about big money in their prime japanese pitchers. Even Uehara didn't break the bank at 2 years 18 million for the initial deal. I don't see a chance of us making a serious offer for Sasaki. Even if they put forth an offer they will make sure that it's 2nd or 3rd so they won't have to actually pay up.

You talking about Pablo Sandoval? yes that deal made ZERO sense at the time and even less sense in hindsight. Red Sox love to waste money on guys who don't improve the roster. I don't get it. Then they complain their payroll is too high and you look at how high their dead money is from paying money to players who aren't even on the ML roster anymore. Pablo Sandoval signed a 5 year , $95,000,000 contract with the Boston Red Sox, including $3,000,000 signing bonus, $95,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $19,000,000. He throws the baseball 100mph and is from Japan so of course the Red Sox won't sign him. Skip to 1:23 mark to see his 102 mph fastball. They haven't gone for a Japanese pitcher since Uehara in 2013. The Yankees and Padres are reportedly interested. West Coast teams generally have the best chance of signing top Japan talents for some reason. Posting expenses have gone down significantly but salary demands have risen to compensate. Can't see the cheapskate Red Sox even making a competitive bid.

I'm reading in various articles that Bregman could want somewhere in the neighborhood of 185m/7 years. It's free agency so that could easily escalate to 190-200m based on the bidding. I'm so ready for our owners to 'fall short' of the highest bid again. But let's see. Adding a gold glove to the hot corner and kicking Devers to 1st would improve both our offense and defense in one move. In this scenario Casas would become expendable in a trade for more pitching. If the Red Sox sign Bregman for 190 and Burnes for 225, they will have spent half the money they earmarked for Soto, and still improved the team a decent amount. No these aren't headline superstar signings, but they would make the team more competitive going forward.

Hear me out: Let's acquire Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
vjcsmoke replied to vjcsmoke's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
The idea would be to get the particulars of the trade outlined first and make completing it conditional on VG Jr agreeing to an extension or new contract before completing the trade. I wouldn't want to be stuck like the Yankees giving up prospects for only 1 year of a great player. VG Jr declined a 340m dollar deal from Toronto. I think 500m should get it done. -
Hear me out: Let's acquire Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
vjcsmoke replied to vjcsmoke's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
He’s the big right handed bat this lineup needs for sure. My thinking on the trade is get him a year early and lock him up long term to a new contract. We know from experience Red Sox ownership when given the option of falling short in free agent bidding will do just that. Put up a false front and get outbid. Cohen’s deep pockets are another factor. If Red Sox bid 500 and he goes 550 we lose again. Just like with Soto. Apparently our offer was around 715, he went 765 and it was over. when you say pay 800 for Soto instead do you believe the prospects to land VG Jr would be worth 300m somehow? -
He's on the last year of his deal and the Blue Jays likely don't want to let him walk for nothing. We negotiate with them a prospect package for 25 year old Guerrero and at the same time we negotiate a new contract for him for 500m to keep him happy and locked up long term. We then sign an Ace level free agent starting pitcher for 200m. As a result we will acquire nearly as great a hitter as Soto who is in his prime and a top of rotation pitcher. Two starting pitchers, a 4x All-Star right-handed power hitting 1st baseman who slugged .940 last season in his prime age. That's a hell of an offseason. Factor into this that makes Casas expendable in a trade without us regretting his loss. Am I crazy or would this be a great use of the Red Sox money and prospects this offseason and at LEAST make us a postseason contender? True Losing Anthony would have been a much harder hit to the farm system. We're still hoping he will pan out and become a top of line up, top 4 batter by this time next year.
-
I believe losing Teel in the trade for crotchet promoted this trade. At age 26 Narvaez is pretty much MLB ready. His hitting numbers were awful in small sample size but he did tear it up in winter league so who knows maybe he can become league average for a catcher some day.

Red Sox Preparing Offer To Free Agent Corbin Burnes
vjcsmoke replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Here was the Front office meeting.: Guys we failed to land Soto but we still need to PRETEND to Try to make fans happy. OK, what do next? We could offer 200+ million for proven starting pitchers like Burnes or Fried. Spend money BAD. Do we have a cheaper answer? Yes sell off the farm and trade for Crochet. Oh yes, less spend is GOOD, we do that ONE! What about Burnes, Fried is gone. Oh we Pretend to go in for him too, the Fans are Suckers, they will buy our Act! -
Red Sox Preparing Offer To Free Agent Corbin Burnes
vjcsmoke replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Watch them offer an insulting deal to Burnes, shrug their shoulders and say, we tried. Considering Fried got 218/8, Burns will cost more. Anywhere from 225-250m is my guess at his final contract total. Red Sox don't have the balls to pony up. As we've seen again and again, they lowball and come back to the fans, Hey at least we tried! You either Piss in the pot or get off, stop teasing us with these lame leaks that lead to nowhere, Red Sox Front Office. Shameful. Full Throttle is such an Awful Joke now! -
Correct. Teel was ranked as one of the top 3 catching prospects in the 2020 draft. And the 25th overall prospect according to MLB.com rankings today. So he is projected to turn into a plus position player. Like I said how well Crochet pans out will be the measuring stick for the deal. If he's a top 3 rotation pitcher, nobody will bat an eyelash at the loss of Teel. Top 100 MLB.com rankings today:

If Crochett turns into an innings eating top 3 of the rotation pitcher the deal is worth. Otherwise this will be seen as folly since catcher is one of our needs at the ML level and Teel was a good catching prospect.

The Red Sox lack of urgency in Free Agency is disturbing to say the least. If they strike out on the remaining premier players, that just reinforces the idea that the Soto pursuit was a farce all along. They just wanted to put up a brave front and say, Alas we were outbid, knowing they'd never beat out the Mets. That's gonna be really sad if it turns out to be true. "This outcome was always a possibility for the Red Sox, but what is truly shocking is the lack of urgency and effort from the Boston front office. Since the beginning of the offseason, the Red Sox have been linked to Fried (and Blake Snell) much more than Corbin Burnes. Now Burnes is the only top-end starter that remains on the free agent market." Article: https://www.newsweek.com/sports/mlb/red-sox-readying-offer-free-agent-ace-after-max-fried-picks-yankees-1998883

First the Red Sox lose out on Soto to the Mets. Now they lose out on Max Fried to the Yankees. It makes you wonder if all the previous intent to spend was just posturing and we are going to again conveniently just 'miss out' on all the top tier free agents because they want too much money. As Mr Henry said, running a baseball team is expensive, you couldn't possibly expect them to spend a lot of money to improve.
-
Who bets we falls short of all the other great free agents as well? Full Throttle is such a JOKE.
-
Always the brides maid and never the bride. You just knew the Red Sox would come short on the money. Well back to misery again in Beantown. Soto on our team was a pleasant dream that went away quick.

Article: A Plea For The Red Sox To Sign Juan Soto
vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
The numbers only sound big in the present. A few years from now this will be considered the normal price for a top tier free agent. Remember when 30m sounded a lot for a franchise player? That's not current economics anymore.- 687 replies
