Bill Smith set them back years and they're still not fully recovered, even though Terry Ryan is back in the saddle (he should never have left). Since Mauer and Morneau and Cuddyer came through, their minors has been a virtual wasteland, particularly for pitching. There are a couple of decent guys like Arcia coming through the upper minors now, with Sano still to come. Under the circumstances, I think Gardy has done about as well as can be expected.

It's only really since the year they took Alvarez that they've been putting the required effort into drafting properly, and by effort I mean paying the money it takes to sign top talent (the new attention to slot money also helps, I guess). It also helps not to have a complete clown for a GM, who will pick Daniel Moskos over Matt Wieters, and then spend the $ that was available for Wieters on picking up all of Matt Morris's contract when the Giants were desperate to get him off their team at any cost.

If he retires, the Yankees don't have to pay the rest of his contract. If I was him I'd stay active, especially if it means sitting on my ass for a few years and getting paid millions for it.

Would LOVE this to happen to A-Rod and Ryan "I got away with juicing" Braun. Probably won't though. Also, I saw an article yesterday where the Yankees are being so casual about the fact A-Rod won't live up to the contract and probably never could. THAT'S YOUR STUPID FAULT FOR GIVING IT TO HIM, YOU IDIOTS.
