  1. No it's the amount of runners you drive in that you find on base. Look if he's not a "productive" hitter when he comes to the plate with the bases loaded, he leaves the bases loaded. If he is a productive hitter some/all of those base runners cross the plate. It's not an every time situation but it certainly is relevant over the course of a season. And did I not say it was only one of the statistics to look at? Seriously, you're completely discounting it because it doesn't tell 100% of the picture - well no one stat in baseball tells 100% of the picture. RBI's as a single number is as good at any other stat in quickly judging a players productivity. That's all. You're really making way too much out of this. It's a number that tells part of a story - just like OPS is a number that tells part of a story - and RAR is a number........
  2. Ah when obstinance trumps logic. Don't be angry Dipre, I like that in a man. And it's a good measure of a hitters ability to produce (not the only measure but a good one). That is one of the abilities sought after in some hitters - production, really it is.
  3. I disagree Dipre.. yes there have to runners on the bases for there to be rbi's but a productive hitter makes use of the OPPORTUNITY where as a non-productive hitter doesn't. Luck/chance is only a factor when you're trying to dismiss poor production numbers.
  4. People don't notice the good moves. If the pinch-hitter gets a hit - credit goes to the hitter. If the reliever gets the big out - credit to the reliever. How many credit Fancona with Roberts steal? You know it was Francona that called it.
  5. I don't think Drew is overrated, I just think he's overpaid. I like the guy... not as much as some of you do obviously, I mean no tattoos or anything. The fans need to just forget about his contract and then JD won't chap their ass so much.
  6. Yes rules... because constant pressure, scrutiny and insults from the media, every fan board, every person on the street and every other 'tard that breathes isn't going to add any additional stress to a man that by definition a head-case (i.e. he's a baseball player, they're all nuts).
  7. Yeah any manager that in only able to bring two world series titles to a team that hadn't won since 1918 should be run out of town on a rail. Methinks there are too many people on this board with short memories - - or not in a position to have any memory of what a bad manager was really like (see "the gerbil" for reference)
  8. I watched the game.. didn't see your sign and didn't record the game. I'm useless to you but thought I'd post so you wouldn't feel ignored.
  9. I wasn't going to click on this thread because of the really stupid title.... but I'm glad I did, you guys crack me up. Still a dumbass thread.
  10. TedWilliams, excellent post. If RSN would just shutup about Ortiz, he'd probably be doing much better.. but we all know that will never happen. Ortiz will be in the lineup at least through April. Francona will give him that long to try and work it out. From now until... I'm just going to do what I always do, watch every game and root for the Sox. And a few have noted but it hasn't really caught on, Ortiz is a notorious slow starter. I didn't expect him to come out of the gate flying.
  11. You shouldn't so off-handedly disregard that many of your fellow posters have watched decades of baseball and probably know the game very well. Especially when it's just to try and make a point that stats (which as I said everyone has a favorite, 1/2 the time they contradict each other and no one ever agrees whose stat is the most relevant) are the only way to go because YOU PERSONALLY LOVE THEM. and if someone wanted to they could say... well obviously you don't understand stats the way those employed by baseball organizations do so you'd do well to stick to the tried and true (for roughly the past 100 years) and learn to observe, process and evalute using nothing more complicated than a scoredcard, a sharp pencil and an experienced set of eyes.
  12. Do you still have a little brother or did he inexplicably turn up missing?
  13. Dipre, fine. That's great, good for you. But I don't care about your stats. That was my entire point from post one. I hate the statistics overkill, that's me. I watch 100% of all Sox games a year (and have since 1973 - ok I listened to most of them on the radio for the first 20 years or so) and feel no need to do more. Enjoy your stats and I'll continue to ignore them and enjoy the game just as much.
  14. AND: I actually sometimes feel like the new stats first generation is really missing something when it comes to baseball. I think they would do themselves a favor if the turned off the computers for a month and just watched for the pure enjoyment of the sport - and made decisions based on visuals, intuition and just plain gut reactions. Their opinions wouldn't be so easy to back up (since they're based on heart, not numbers) but they'd probably enjoy the conversations and the game a lot more.
  15. I've been posting on baseball boards for 20 years and it's possible to have truly awesome conversations without ever mentioning a statistic. In fact, baseball conversations used to be a billion times more enjoyable before the sabermetric generation took over. Now baseball boards often look more like a calculus exam than a discussion of the Grand Ole Game.
  16. "Stats are the only really reasonable way to asses a player's ability and worth, specially on offense." Actually what you truly said is a bit more condescending than how I paraphrased it. Dipre I don't have a problem with stat dudes all I ask is that they accept I'm going to ignore their stats and just discuss the game. If my non-stat approach to a hobby offends you, I'll understand if you choose to not respond to me in the future. I certainly have no problem with your statistical approach, I'm just not interested.
  17. Well I can't disagree with that statement. But... I still watch baseball for love of the game. It's one of my passions, not my job. I just want to discuss today's Sox, yesterday's Sox, the Sox from 30 years ago... I know a lot of people are really into statistics and I don't begrudge them their passion/hobby but I'm more into the emotional side of the game. Do the numbers say what kind of leftfielder Yaz was? Frankly, I don't give a crap! I think he was great and since I'm not a G/M that's really good enough for me.
  18. I agree that Drew should hit higher than 8th in the line-up.
