Before this turns into a pissing contest.
NO.. I was the one that used stop-gap, so when I saw Stop Gap bolded and capitalized I made an error in judgment believing you were attempting to both make a point and correct MY spelling.
That is all.
and I have no problem with that, in fact I like disagreeing with the stat geeks because I get real tired of listening to their UZR's and WAR's when I don't even believe they have yet to find a 100% (or even 85%) accurate way to assess fielders.
He's above average in my opinion and I don't really care about the sabermetrics.
Dipre, I'm not a stat geek and after about 3 posts in a row of them I turn it all into white noise. Just to let you know you are now and forever wasting your time and you're one post away from being white noise. I accept your opinion on Drew, I just don't agree with it.
Before I started posting here I read your many, many stats re: JD Drew. I wasn't moved. Like I said I think he's an asset to the team but that's as far as I can go.:harhar:
Scutaro is just a stop-gap measure with great defensive skills, perhaps they overpaid for the one year but it's hard to say. Stopping runs is harder to quantify than creating them.
No Francona doesn't suck. No Hermidia and Reddick are not better choices than Cameron and JD Drew. No JD Drew does not suck either. No JD Drew is not one of the best hitting outfielders in baseball and probably not worth his $14 million but I do think he's a huge asset to the team.
Is there some place where we can vote for stupidest thread of the year?
Making it even more memorable was that he was badly injured and couldn't lift his arm all the way up, so he had to pitch side-armed and only off speed stuff the entire (5?) 6 innings against the Guardians. That wasn't just amazing, it was living legend. If he's not a first ballot HOFer I will be storming the castle.
Many complain about the perceived lack of offense but my biggest concern has been and continues to be the bullpen.. and this thread has not improved my outlook.
BEST:
1975 Carlton Fisk homer game 6 world series will always be number one. That homerun has been overplayed on TV so much it now almosts seems trite to mention it but I was 12 years old and I still remember that moment as clear as daylight after all these years.
WORST:
Bryce Florie getting hit in the face by a Ryan Thompson liner. That image is still too real and it's been 10 years.
Out of those I saw play:
Dwight Evans, Yaz, Fred Lynn, Luis Tiant, Carlton Fisk and Pedro Martinez.
and I always had a soft spot for Dauber, streakiest hitter I ever saw.
I think it's a nice gesture but I do agree with the poster that said it would have been nicer if he could have been on the roster for one game at the major league level. I wouldn't worry too much about how he left. The reception he received when he returned to Fenway last season, in an away team uniform, was amazing.
Thanks for the compliment.
but... I think it's just too early to make any predictions about Lowell in the field this year. Honestly, I don't think Lowell was a complete disaster in 2009 (but an upgrade was definitely needed) and if he's at the same level as 2009 (if not improved) I think he could be a useful backup.
Someone above made the very good point that Lowell's range has always been limited but he positioned himself well. Just because he had hip surgery, I'm sure he hasn't forgotten how to play the game.
and Yazman... I just don't know how to evaluate a step or 1/2 step so I can't really answer your question.
