  1. Somehow Farrell seems to get immunity every time a pitcher has technique problems. If the pitching coach-- the guy paid for the sole purpose of making sure pitchers get it done-- doesn't realize that a pitcher can't rely on one pitch, why even have him around? Its one thing if a pitcher is underperforming because he's hurt, but half the time its because Farrell can't fix technique problems if they spat in his face. How many times have pitchers lost full seasons of effectiveness without any serious injury? Beckett 2010, Dice-k 2009, Buchholz 2008 come to mind. He had no idea how to fix Smoltz in 2009, Delcarmen was afraid to talk to him about his injury last year and he has no clue how to handle Dice-k. Lester is always the first one to spring training every year, but why is it that he always has such a rough start to the season? It took Farrell a month and a half to figure out that pitchers need to hold base runners. I stand by the argument that Farrell is an incompetent bumbling fool.
  2. I think it hangs entirely how the next wave of Red Sox prospects does. They will need an outfielder, a catcher, a corner infielder and two more bullpen arms. They'll fill whatever they can from within the organization, but they have 40 million for the rest. The problem for Nava is that the biggest place the Sox can improve coming out of the offseason is in the outfield with two great options in Werth and Crawford. I could very easily see them having 5 outfielders, and rotating one into the DH spot, so Nava could work for a spot if he hits like he deserves it. But if they stick with 4, and pick up a DH, he could be the odd man out.
  3. Bard makes a dominant setup man. But he's not ready to close, and we've seen that lately. Last year, back before Delcarmen's back injuries, there was talk about him being the next closer, and some mentioned that he might get traded to close somewhere else. I honestly think they'll try to trade paps, and then look for a stopgap solution for 2011.
  4. Yes I can. He had 5 bad starts to start the year, and then 2 more throughout this season. You seem to be able to ignore those signs of inconsistency, but people paying the checks don't. It hurts his contract value, that's a fact. Last year Jarrod Washburn had a great start with Seattle, and then pitched 8 bad games with Detroit, and see how much he got.
  5. You may still be correct.
  6. You were comparing him to AL pitchers--but he's been playing in the NL-- so I called you out on it. I'm not saying he's staying in the AL-- he probably shouldn't. He got a 3/34 contract in 2007. I don't see him getting a 3/45 now when he's 4 years older and showing signs of inconsistency, in a worse economy, and a pitching heavy league.
  7. Maybe it had something to do with facing the toughest offense in the world. Or, maybe Daniel Nava is the second coming of Manny Ramirez.
  8. Daniel Nava with 3 RBIs against Jimenez. Can we all agree that every once in a while, RBIs do actually have value?
  9. Sure. Problem is, he's closer to a #3 or #4. On the Yankees, he's a solid 5.
  10. If Lackey gets the win tonite, he's officially luckier than Dice-k.
  11. Okay, I'll relent. He's the best at staying healthy. You can't blame other pitchers for being injured.
  12. And that was without their best hitter.
  13. Good does not equal "the best". He's consistent and you know you're getting a solid pitcher. But He's not even in the conversation for the "best".
  14. "WHO WANTS MORE OUTFIELDERS NOW BITCHES"- Mcdonald and Nava
  15. Trivia Question-- How many years did Wakefield pitch 180+ innings for 3-5 million for the Sox? Answer- 5. Vazquez career ERA 4.21. Wakefield career ERA 4.36. Consider Wakefield has pitched in the toughest division for most of his career. How well do you think he would have done in the NL-- have you ever seen a pitcher try to hit a knuckleball? Vazquez is not one of the best pitchers of the past decade. He's not in the same league as Santana, Sabathia, Halladay, Lincecum, Pedro, Cliff Lee, Verlander, Randy Johnson, etc.
  16. Did... Daniel Nava get 2 RBIs off Jimenez?
  17. Randy Wolf is the best comparison there is, if you factor in age and relative skill. Kevin Millwood and Ted Lily got deals around 4/40 and 4/48 but they were 30 years old back, so much closer to prime years. It also was back when we weren't in an economic depression. Pettite has been getting one year contracts from 10-16 million for a while. The only pitchers I found with a similar track record of strikeouts and IP have far lower ERA, like Halladay or Verlander. The big strikeout/innings pitchers allow far few runs scored. I think that in the case of Vazquez you're overvaluing strikeouts. There really is no value to strikeouts without other stats backing them up-- they often are correlated to a good pitcher, but it doesn't necessarily mean a pitcher is good. IP is valuable, sure, but Wakefield can pitch a similar number of innings with a similar ERA for around 3-4 million a year.
  18. The reason Nava moved up so fast was that he was a lot older and developed than a lot of the guys in A/AA because of his time in the independent league. Strasburg didn't need a ton of time, and he's a lot younger. And not everyone here is in love with Drew.
  19. You know, that's what I thought too, but I get the feeling they're going to try to make do with what they have. Okajima appears to be stabilizing, Atchison has turned into an acceptable longman, and Delcarmen doesn't appear to be having back problems anymore. I also think they're expecting that either Robert Manuel or Dustin Richardson will start contributing eventually. Obviously, come July if none of their prospects pan out, they'll need someone else, but I'm wondering if they're just thinking about holding onto their chips.
