  1. The Rangers just traded their #7, #8, and #20 prospect for Gallardo. Meanwhile, the Brewers send them 4 million back to pay for it all. I don't understand baseball sometimes.
  2. Throw-ins don't have ERA's below 1.00 most of the season in a run to the World Series. The guy is talented. Much like all prospects -- like Rizzo-- it just took him time to get there.
  3. I was referring to pitching, and I assume iortiz is as well.
  4. Wade Davis was a BA top 50 prospect with the Rays for 4 years before turning into a lights out reliever in 2014. Odorizzi was a top 100 prospect that hadn't hit the majors yet. I don't see them as vastly different in value. The trade would probably take one of Bogaerts/Betts/Swihart plus one of the mid-tier pitching prospects. They would have to give up a lot, but not completely selling the farm.
  5. You and I have vastly different ideas of what James Shields in his prime is worth. 230 IP a year at a 3.30 ERA in the AL East is worth significantly more than an injury prone NL pitcher who has broken 200 IP once in his career.
  6. Doug Fister. This is a guy who has always been a #2/3/4 on his team and has always pitched like a #2, and sometimes #1. The Nationals traded junk to get him, and somehow he's their #5 now. A 50% GB rate fits well with this team, and he won't kill the budget Maybe he's available for a mid-tier piece?
  7. James Shields (2 seasons) cost Will Myers. I'd argue that the other two pieces (Wade Davis for Jake Odorizzo, a top 100 prospect) were of somewhat equal value. Samardzija (1.5 years) + Hammel for Addison Russell. David Price for (1.5 seasons) Drew Smyly + Nick Franklin, a top 100 prospect.
  8. I'd love Shields here. I would have loved Lester or Scherzer too. However, if the Red Sox aren't going to pay big money, then they might as well get a pitcher via the trade market, and Strasburg is a good one.
  9. Ace pitchers have been costing 1 bluechip + pieces these days, not 3.
  10. The odds of a RHP starter pitching effectively into his late 30s generally are not very good. Look at Halladay -- his career fell off a cliff at 35. The Red Sox have been very clear on their opinion of old starting pitchers -- my guess is Bill James has given them plenty of hard evidence on that.
  11. Scherzer made money off his last three years (3.24 ERA, 6.50 IP per start) than his career numbers (3.58 ERA, 6.00 IP per start). I would have understood 150, but 210 seems far too much.
  12. Strasburg has an upward trajectory, and Shields has a downward one. The Red Sox FO doesn't want to sign old pitchers anymore. Shields would be great, but I just don't see them paying the money -- the bigger problem is that I don't see them paying the money on the 2015 offseason's pitchers either.
  13. He's generally hovered around a 3.00 ERA, and 10 K/9. He has been mostly healthy since the TJS in 2010, but you never know how elbows last on power pitchers these days. It seems like a risk worth taking, but I'd be happy with Fister or Zimmerman too.
  14. I'm more concerned about seeing a good team than what the chanters think or believe. With everything we hear about the front office's thinking, Strasburg is the type of guy they are looking for, and the kind of guy they would work on extending. That being said, Fister may cost significantly less, fits into the team's finances and has a very high GB%.
  15. I don't know about you, but I am tired of prospects that don't work out. The Sox need to find top tier pitching somewhere, and they clearly aren't paying top dollar on anyone.
  16. The number is 180-- much more than I thought was involved here. I don't understand why teams insist on bidding against themselves. A Swihart-led deal for Strasburg makes a lot of sense.
  17. If they're selling, he's the kind of pitcher the Red Sox are willing to trade blue chips to get.
  18. Valid points. Workman and Wright are probably the next two guys up. Unless some of the other guys make strides, that's not good news.
  19. The months between the end of football and start of baseball are some of the coldest days of the year.
  20. People who don't put Shields into the ace category need to take a serious look at his numbers. He's always in the low 3.00 ERA's with 225+ IP, and hasn't missed a start his whole career.
  21. The Jays are giving Shields a long look. Adding an ace makes them easy favorites in the division, maybe the Red Sox will work on outmaneuvering them.
  22. Snippet from Cots. The way it is worded gives me the impression that the Phillies have to pay it no matter what. There is an option with a buyout on the contract. From what I understand, The 200 IP clause guarantees the final year at 27.5 to be vested, and the buyout will always be part of the contract.
  23. Moncada certainly has been hyped enough. The story is kind of insane, and a real reason why improving relations with Cuba could really help baseball. He's under house arrest in Guatemala, protected by guards with machine guns. Meanwhile, Scott Boras sent agents down to try to pry him away from his current agents, and the armed guards "escorted" them off the property. Every single team sent multiple representatives to a Guatemala showcase in December. Every single one, even the Cubs and Rangers who probably can't even bid on him because they went over the international cap last year. The other teams will have to pay DOUBLE whatever he gets because of the international draft rules, and many of them will lose international drafting rights next year if they sign him. Whoever wins the bidding gets an extremely talented player who will likely be even more of an arrogant prick than most of the other Cubans we've seen come up.
  24. The Tigers just paid 20 million for Price's last arbitration year. They're looking to be significantly over their previous max salary totals, and may even nudge against the luxury tax. They might not be able to afford Max-Price.
  25. Crawford still talks sorely about the Red Sox -- he clearly hasn't been able to move on. You would think he would be more grateful to a team that paid him 40 million to do absolutely nothing.
