  1. There are a lot of issues with Molina. His arm has slowed considerably, he doesn't hit very well, he's 35, and is considering retirement. Unfortunately, he just isn't what he used to be, so Olivo is the best option left on the market.
  2. I agree with you completely. I think they need to bite the bullet and send Olivo a 3/15 contract. He threw out 42% of base-stealers last year, and he hits well enough. He's no Martinez, but he's the best left out there, and if Salty or another option looks better in 2012/2013, 5 mill for a backup isn't the end of the world.
  3. I know his WHIP sucked, and his ERA left a bit to be desired, but he didn't have a horrible season. He was 8th in the league in IP, and 8th in the league in quality starts. I've been saying it since they signed him, but he's meant to be a veteran presence in the rotation who will absorb innings, get wins, and protect the young arms coming through the system. He has done all that. Lackey is not the kind of guy who will either pitch like an ace or like garbage on any given game. He's usually good, and sometimes very good. He pitched fewer than 6 innings only five times all season. With a better catcher, and a better pitching coach, I see him being a very consistent part of this rotation moving forward.
  4. The FO needs to bite the bullet and go for a defensive catcher. Barajas threw out 15% of base stealers last season. That is abysmal. Its not worth a .700 OPS. As far as Varitek, I think there is something they know about him. They didn't offer him arbitration, despite that he'd only make 3.6 million or so with a 20% raise. Its too bad he probably won't retire a Red Sox, but catchers never do age well.
  5. Holliday got a 7/120. If Crawford would be okay with a 4/80 with a 5th year option, that'd be awesome. As far as Berkman-- I'd put him as a Plan E, after Dunn/Konerko/Beltre/D Lee.
  6. There is a reason why I avoid 4chan.
  7. Ownership is clearly upset by the ratings, and has explicitly said they'll make some big moves this off-season. They overpaid for Drew, Lackey, Dice-k, Lowell, Beckett... if they want fans to keep coming, they have to gain more than they lose this year.
  8. This is very true, and if you're a skeptic, then realized their tv show will lose its ratings if they don't.
  9. It is sort of funny... Varitek got, what, a 2/10 deal for his intangibles after his decline, and Jeter is looking for 3/45?
  10. It seems more often that holding onto players bites them in the ass. Beckett and Lowell, for example. But that doesn't mean I think letting Vmart go was a good decision.
  11. You missed Cabrera, Youk was injured, Morneau was injured, Howard was injured, Tex had an off-season. There are just so many big names at 1B. But the thing you're really missing.. That would be the point. He's good, but not THAT good. You don't spend two or three whole seasons waiting for him while putting your team on hold.
  12. Last year, SD wanted Buchholz and Ellsbury. Considering the Sox would probably be the highest bidders on A-gon anyway and could probably lock him up, this would not be unthinkable.
  13. In all honesty, if that was the deal, the sox should take it. You lose a pitching prospect whose stock dropped a ton, a 1B who would be blocked anyway, and Ellsbury who they can replace with Crawford. But there is no way SD would take that deal.
  14. If the Red Sox want to overpay on one player to humiliate the Yankees... Lee is your guy.
  15. Jacko-- where did you read about them offering arbitration to Wood? I found an article that said otherwise on the post.
  16. I changed my mind. You know what this team needs to do? Say f*** Crawford, and get Lee.
  17. Agon is good. I'm not saying he's not good. But what I'm saying is that for what he is, we shouldn't spend two years in a bridge state waiting for him. Were it Pujols, I'd wait five. Do you really see Crawford getting close to a Holliday deal?
  18. Pujols, Cabrera, Texiera, Votto, Youkilis, Konerko, Bautista...
  19. I think the bridge year idea needs to end. We need to stop thinking about future big FA, and start thinking of current ones. I strongly believe this team should go big, but hold onto its future talent at the same time. I think that this "Waiting for Agon" plan should stop being this team's priority, and I think we should stop assuming Rizzo and Kelly are turning into Pujols and Johnson. Agon is a career .875 hitter. Fielder is a big oaf who won't be worth his contract. Quite frankly, both of them barely make the top 10 in quality 1B. Crawford is here, and now, and the Yankees don't want him.
  20. Except that we can't necessarily anticipate a perfect health season next year. Ortiz probably won't hit 30 bombs, and the entire outfield is a wildcard. And remember what kind of production we got at C last year? That wasn't pretty.
  21. Quality post. As much as the Yankees abuse the salary cap system, lately the Sox have been abusing the compensation pick system. They'll probably lose their 3 FAs, and pick up 3 more type A's, and still end up with 5 top 50 picks. Then they'll draft better prospects with expensive signing demands-- so they'll pick up five of the best prospects despite signing big free agents. I was very much expecting them to lose VMart, but I didn't know he'd sell so slow, or that Buck would already be gone-- so they definitely need to get very creative at catcher this season if they lose out on Olivio.
