  1. Benoit's deal messed with the market because he was quite a bit overpaid, relievers were waiting for better offers. And now that Downs got the same deal, it reset the reliever market, and they are more likely to sign reasonable offers.
  2. How many rings does he have? There is definitely a point where you're hurting your future team by stalling on negotiations. So far, he hasn't hurt the Yankees too much, but if he waits until mostly everyone has signed, it will hurt him in the long run.
  3. Yeah, I was aware of that, but they still took a huge risk because of his popularity, and because of how they floundered after dismantling the team in '05.
  4. Ugh. Did the Angels really just spend 15 mill and a first round pick on a reliever? Maybe that means they're in on Beltre.
  5. What benefit would that be to them? Its not like they have to face them 18 times a year. They really want Lee, and I bet they'd pay as much as 6/130 or 7/140, but much higher than that would do more harm than good for them.
  6. Reports say that now the Yankees are putting the pressure on Martin.
  7. Martin's career numbers are of no use to this discussion. He has hit poorly the last two seasons, and now on top of that, he's coming off of hip surgery. I understand that in the past, he's been an elite catcher, and I know exactly how valuable good SS/C are on a team. That being said, that isn't what he is anymore, and I don't see him going anywhere but down offensively-- he's a fast singles hitter that just had surgery on his labrum. Remember what happened to Mike Lowell? Now imagine Mike Lowell with no power.
  8. I hear that Bill Hall can play catcher too....
  9. I would argue that the ownership is willing to overpay for players out of loyalty... to an extent. Lowell's contract is a good example-- they paid him far more than they wanted to because he helped win them a world series. Ortiz too, because they overpaid him a little bit because he's an immensely popular player, and the extra money he costs above value is made up in fan revenue for him being on the Red Sox. But they aren't going to pay Papelbon Rivera money, by any means.
  10. As much as I hate to say it, Sabathia is probably the most durable pitcher in baseball. He's been over-used in the playoffs the last two years, and his end with the Brewers was ridiculous, and somehow those innings have yet to catch up to him. He carries himself incredibly well, and I think he's going to actually be worth the money... Just hope he opts out and gets a huge raise.
  11. For some reason there are a lot of people who like to complain. But these moves are big for the team. From a business standpoint, adding another monster bat, and another speedester will raise the popularity of the team quite a bit-- aka money. And from a competitive standpoint, it not only makes the Sox the best offense in baseball, but it also makes them an elite defensive team. Left handed pitching might be a problem, but I think they're looking for a solution to that as we speak.
  12. Except that when you have a lineup like the one they have now, you need to go with something that will work, defensively, and offensively. You don't overpay on projects. This is a guy who has hit .821 versus lefties over his career in a lineup that needs help versus lefties.
  13. They're picking up, what, 6-7 first/supplemental picks? They'll reload through their youngins, if not now, then in a season or two. Price/Davis/Hellickson will be scary-good, its just a matter of them making other moves to fill in holes.
  14. As said, give it till atleast Lester warms up until complaining:D
  15. This Martin thing still baffles me. He hit what, .650 last year? Olivo's .765, and better arm cost 2/7 from the Mariners, and they're thinking 7 mill to Martin? Baffling. Who knows if he'll keep up that OBP with a bad hip-- they should have gone for defense at C years ago.
  16. Some players don't necessarily want to play till they're 40.
  17. His physical is tomorrow-- they refuse to comment on Crawford until then.
  18. College in Boston is pretty great, so I hear. I moved out here since graduating, and I can only say good things.
  19. Picks received from players who leave a team are protected.
  20. But because he's type A, his monetary cost will be significantly lower, plus he's an elite setup guy, and for this bullpen, that's pretty much instant-win. And, the Sox are getting atleast 3 first rounders, plus maybe two more depending on what Detroit and Beltre do this offseason.
