1. Dice-k's issues with Farrell have been well-documented. Young will do wonders for him.
2. Err, did you actually look at the chart?
3. Its going to be a one year deal. Low risk, high reward for the Yankees, so he knows he can take advantage of their desperation.
4. f*** no, don't accept a lowball offer. 20 AAV, minimum-- they're desperate, and everyone knows it.
5. In that case-- perhaps we can narrow down our discussions to pitchers have the Sox not been connected to?
6. Relax. They just spent 300 million on two position players. They're not going to skimp on 15-30 million dollars worth of relief pitching.
7. "Give us Felix, and you can pick any five players in our organization"-- About ten different teams in the MLB, including the Sox. I really doubt they'll trade him right now.
8. The simple fact of the matter is... this team is desperate for bullpen help. If Bard goes down, is there anyone on this team you can really trust?
9. There has been a lot of talk about how this team will fare against left-handed pitching. So, I figured it might be worth putting things into perspective with how this team hits against left-handed pitching. So, I’ll throw out OPS splits for 2010/2009/2008/Career. Obviously other stats may apply, so if anyone wants to add them to the discussion, that’d work too. For the sake of analysis, let's keep in mind that the Yankee's 2010 Team OPS was .786.
Player|2010 OPS|2009 OPS |2008 OPS |Career OPS Ellsbury|x|.785|.728|.752 Pedroia|.700|.765|.903|.806 A-gon|.937|.770|.675|.783 Youkilis|1.311|.953|1.009|.926 Ortiz|.599|.716|.740|.795 Drew|.611|.863|.926|.780 Cameron|x|.954|.951|.868 Lowrie|x|x|x|.944 Varitek|x|.807|.863|.829
And the bench.
Player|2010 OPS|2009 OPS |2008 OPS |Career OPS Crawford|.696|.704|.641|.697 Scutaro|.743|.809|.732|.738 Saltamacchia|x|.657|.443|.592 Kalish|.599|x|x|.599
From a quick glance it seems like this team will be absolutely fine against lefties. However, considering that 4 of the players used in starting roles here (Tek, Ortiz, Drew, Cameron) are probably going to see declines. Lowrie obviously will not keep up his numbers. Catcher definitely is a scary position against LHH, and DH could be a problem as well. More from me later.
10. While we're talking about it-- anyone look at the closer market for 2012? I'd hope Bard will be ready, but you never know.
11. Odd... Masterson is a righty specialist...
12. The Yankees don't have a lot of options. But the one--and best--option they do have is Andy Pettite. Considering the number of top starters that have been traded in the last year-- Oswalt, Halladay, Lee, Haren, even Vazquez, and eventually Greinke-- I think getting a #1 or #2 guy right now is going to be incredibly expensive.
13. I don't see the White Sox trading a quality starter to a fellow wildcard candidate after they spent so much on offense this offseason.
14. With the Yankees having big money to spend on relievers, and the Sox being limited by Crawford's deal, it may be in their best interest to get some type A's on the cheap.
15. Wang had the potential of a #2 starter, and still only 30. No clue what he can do now, but I've always liked him.
16. He's not going to justify that salary anywhere. He's better off platooning with the sox than being paid to start somewhere else.
17. In the last four seasons-- including 2010, he has hit lefties .900 or better. And he's a considerably better defender than any of the players you're suggesting.
18. Daily memo to the New York Yankees Sign Carl Pavano:D
19. As surprising as it may seem, I think Cameron is untouchable right now. 3 LHH in the outfield, and Cameron hits RHH and can play any position out there.
20. Actually, I think some of us enjoying watching him backpedal. Also, sigged.
21. Perhaps it is time for a bridge year in New York?
22. Let's hope this is a trend!!
23. Philadelphia is the most complete team right now, that's what attracted him there. Sort of funny though-- considering the Sox offered 7/low, what if he had been most attracted to winning, and took that offer to pitch here?
