  1. If the Cubs sign Shields today at a bargain price, they'll be the ones laughing. Adding Lester, Shields, and Dexter Fowler to the likes of Rizzo, Soler, Castro, and the best farm system in baseball will push them into contention far faster than anyone expected.
  2. Badenhop to Reds. Meh.
  3. Yankees making a strong play at Shields. Greaaaat.
  4. The MLB just unblocked Moncada, and other Cuban players already confirmed by the U.S. so they are now available to sign on a major league team. The Phillies also just put Hamels back into play. Many teams including the Yanks and Dodgers will be focused on those guys -- I wonder how it will all work out.
  5. There is plenty of payroll flexibility to make Shields work at 3/60 or 4/70. At that price, it is a no-brainer. They should dangle Buchholz, and look for 8-10M. Later on, they can make more room with Craig (6 M), Victorino (13M), Mujica(5M). Or they can just spend the money and keep the players.
  6. Please take that argument with a grain of salt... During long cold offseasons after bad seasons, people tend to get pissy. When there is something else to talk about, people will shift gears.
  7. I've heard that also. What really frustrates me is that the Red Sox kept saying "We're looking for an ace, but at the right price". Shields seems like he might be available for that right price.
  8. Any mods around? Can we have this thread closed please?
  9. Vazquez has been hanging out with the Molinas a few years actually. By next year, he'll be teaching them a few things:cool:
  10. I can't stop thinking about James Shields. The pricetag has gone way down. The Patriots just upped the bar for New England sports, and Superbowl hype should die down soon. The Red Sox have a rotation of 20-something pitchers and probably could use a veteran presence, because Laptop is not going to be the ace or leader of this staff. Maybe it is time to get creative. A 1/30 contract? A 3 year contract with lucrative vesting options? The lineup looks excellent, the defense looks excellent, the bullpen has potential. Why not finish the whole thing off with the most durable pitcher in baseball?
  11. There are two or three that lurk. Yeszir is fairly good at addressing major issues.
  12. Seriously guys... wait till Friday atleast.
  13. Apparently Porcello's grandfather was a Red Sox. Did anyone know that?
  14. The Red Sox have not been so great identifying starting pitching from the scrap heap but their relief acquisitions have been better. Aceves was excellent for a year. Andrew Miller wasn't injuried but he certainly was a work in progress. I'd argue Koji might be in the "dumpster dive" group too considering his injury history at the time.
  15. Excellent depth signing. Ogando is a guy who can both close and start. Hopefully he's healthy and cheap.
  16. Miley and Porcello were great additions to the team. The rest of the rotation seems like it has a lot of question marks. Buchholz and Masterson both had awful 2014s. Kelly has potential, but he has never broken 120 IP in the majors. Who is depth for those guys? The Red Sox traded the only prospects who saw major league starts in Webster, Ranaudo, RDLR. Wright and Barnes are next on the list, but they didn't get playing time last September. The rotation seems very unfinished.
  17. It does seem crazy that the offense is making 120 million this year, and the starting pitching is only making 35 million.
  18. Swihart's career may begin around the same time Ortiz's ends. Having the DH spot available for Swihart gives him the opportunity to backup Vazquez, stay healthy, and still get the ABs.
  19. Buchholz doesn't need to emerge as an ace. He needs to emerge as a pitcher that is successful for 2-3 months until reinforcements come from the farm/trade market. Buchholz has those stretches where he is among the best pitchers in the league. 2013 -- 1.71 ERA. 2012 -- 2.80 ERA June-September. 2011-- 2.70 ERA May-June. 2010-- 2.33 ERA. We just have to do a lot of praying, but otherwise it isn't completely out of the question.
  20. Chad Billingsley to Philly for 1.5 million. Man, that one feels like a miss -- he seemed like excellent depth.
  21. The Red Sox have had impressively bad luck with prospects over the last 5 years. I am looking at Baseball America's top 100 from 2008-2012 for the Red Sox, and the list is pretty awful. I'm looking at ten duds, and only one or two successful players. It is a complete crapshoot, unless you trade a prospect -- that basically guarantees that they will be a superstar.
  22. Shields is there for the taking. If the Red Sox offered a 4/80 contract with one or two vesting options based on innings, he would probably take it. I am still in the "we need an ace" side of the argument.
  23. It still seems incredible that the Red Sox got Rodriguez from the Andrew Miller trade. It is also pretty crazy that he was only the Orioles third best pitching prospect.
  24. I was just reading that one myself -- found it here :http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-particular-upside-of-robbie-ross/
  25. We spend hours every week talking about baseball. I certainly hope I know you well enough by now. 60 win seasons frustrate you. That's not a slight against you in any way shape or form.
