That's a big cost for a team that's 7 games back on the division. Maybe they plan to resign him with Buerhle's contract expiring, but is one arm really going to help this Jay's team's pitching?

The Rangers just gave up their #1, 4, 5, 6, and 17 prospects. They also gave up former ace Matt Harrison, who may or may not be a salary dump. Well s***. Philly finally got the franchise changing haul they wanted. EDIT: Earlier reports showed Gallo included, so not nearly as much talent went to Philly.

I have heard mid-rotation potential for two, and back of the rotation for the other.

Jeter's farewell tour brought in millions of fans that were otherwise bored with a losing team. I imagine the Red Sox will market Ortiz the same way, although I am hoping for better results in 2016.

Its hard to trade cheap controlled pitching when you need cheap, controllable pitching. That being said, the Reds got 3 potential starters for half a season of Cueto despite many scouts concerned his elbow is falling off.

His value is undeniable. That being said, the Red Sox can't justify trading him unless they get a franchise changing haul of prospects back. Trading Ortiz will probably cost the organization millions of dollars for the rest of the season just in attendance and PR.

If only Buch could have lasted a few more weeks, the Red Sox might have gotten something shiny for him. Now, we're sitting here waiting for him to get kicked off the roster.

So they fire Ben. Then what? They hire some smuck that you badmouth just as much, and in 6 years after that GM won a championship, but came in last a few times you're happy to see him gone too.

Ben made a pile of trades that won the Red Sox a championship. He has built a farm system referred to by some experts as the best in the majors. He's also made some terrible moves lately. I buy into the big picture of the team's current strategy. They're building a core of young players, and not trading away any top talent. They need an ace, but they know, and I think they're going to get one.

How can you say the current scouting department has a bad eye for pitching if they bring in a pile of solid young pitchers? The 2007-2010 drafts were awful, but I would imagine that's a whole different team than the group they have now.

I agree that the farm system hasn't produced much pitching from 2009-2014. Tazawa, Doubront, Bard, Workman. Besides Taz, that's pretty awful. That being said, there are 4 young starters with MLB potential on the 40 man roster right now, so your point may lose a lot of validity in the next few months.

Rutledge career splits are roughly equal -- .700 OPS against both sides. He's a utility player type, with poor defense at multiple positions. He seems like the kind of fill-in player you pick up when you're about to sell some players on your team, and you need warm bodies.

Victorino headed to the Angels. He was a great player in 2013, and I was happy they signed him. Its too bad about the injuries, hopefully he has some success in LA.

There was a report out last week that Degrom was almost sent to the Red Sox for a backup catcher in 2012. At the time, he was a low ceiling prospect that neither team regarded that highly. It seems silly to judge a team on its lottery picks.

Your argument was that this organization didn't draft aces, so that was what I was responding to. As far as midlevel/back end rotation types... let's give it a few months before making this kind of claim. Johnson and Owens were both drafted by this organization and could turn into impact guys. They need an ace in front of them, but we seem to agree on that.

Trey Ball was drafted at 7th overall. Excluding pitchers who didn't sign, the next pitchers to go were: Braden Shipley at 15th overall. Chris Anderson at 18th overall Marco Gonzales 19th overall Jonathon Crawford 20th overall Hunter Harvey 22nd overall Alex Gonzalez 23rd overall None of these guys are stud pitchers in the majors right now.

These guys are all early round picks or pulled from other countries at young ages. The Red Sox haven't had opportunities to get into those low picks, and even when they can go low, they might go with a position player instead. Trey Ball, Espinoza, and Acosta are the high ceiling guys in the system, but they're all very young. Which early rounder pitchers has this team missed on? Matt Barnes is the only one I can think of recently. Brian Johnson came from a weak draft class, and the Red Sox went for a guy with a low ceiling/high floor that would make it to the majors quickly. Owens is looking like a major league starter. The Red Sox drafted Casey Kelly early, but traded him away for A-gon before his value dropped too far. Same with Hagadone.

In addition to the Os floating Gausman, the Mets are apparently considering moving Zack Wheeler. The Red Sox have still been asking about young high upside pitching-- I wonder what they're going to be able to do with the limited major league trade pieces they have. The Mets are connected to Zobrist. I wonder if a Wheeler for Holt deal makes sense.

Whether we keep Swihart or not, he's worth more than Hamels. I'd centerpiece him for a trade for a cheap young pitcher, not an expensive declining one.

Do the Red Sox really want to spend 100 million and Swihart on a 32 year old pitcher with an ERA hovering around 4.00? They really need to wait till the offseason....

This year's team sucks. The decisions made for 2015 were bad. Cheaping out on pitching was an awful idea, and the Lackey/Lester trades f***ed up the team's starting pitching core and have inevitably yielded zero/negative value. That being said, this team looks pretty good in 2016. The young core will continue developing. Owens, Johnson, and Wright could very well help the rotation out quite a bit. There's money for atleast 1 top tier starting pitcher... in an insanely rare year where there are probably 3-4 top tier starters available, and about a half dozen #2s. The Red Sox also have the best farm system in baseball, with another low draft pick coming. If the Red Sox get rid of the boobs, I hope his replacement buys into the same strategy, but with a bit better decision making skills. The drunken sailor approach to GMing never really appealed to me.

The problem with Buch isn't the good years where he pitches like an ace one half, and goes on the DL till September. The problem with Buch is the years where he has a nick or bruise that ruins his season. Let's not forget the 5.34 ERA from last year or the 4.56 from 2012. Buchholz is a pitcher who pitches well half the time, who pitches half the time. So you're getting 1/4 ace, 1/4 dud, 1/2 DL.

Miley is a cheap lefty who will provide 180-200 innings from the back of the rotation. His numbers are skewed by a bad April (8.82 ERA) but he has been fine since. He's not an ace, but he's not exactly a problem either. Let's say you do get rid of Buch, Porcello, Miley, Kelly, Masterson. Replacing 4 starters is extremely difficult in a single offseason. Let's say you have 50 million to spend... How do you pull in 4 reliable starters better than Miley with that kind of money?
