  1. [/b] True, but considering that you're talking about Willy Mo Pena, that's not saying much. There was another trade where we got boned...
  2. Yeah but horse or not you don't want to have a huge increase in innings, especially with someone that young just because you don't want to increase their chances of injury the following season, or hinder their development. I don't mind Lester pitching big innings, I just don't like a huge increase in between seasons.
  3. How much money do we lose if we dump Bard (because of the non-guaranteed contract)
  4. Agreed, it was mainly hindsight that made the Sox look bad for the Gagne trade. At the time, it looked great. Gabbard, although good for the Sox, didn't have velocity and was expendable. Murphy looked like he'd be a backup OF at best, and very little was mentioned of Beltre. The Sox had led the Yankees by a few games and got a (previously) dominant closer in addition to Papelbon and Okajima with the intend of winning a lot of close games in the dog fight that was the AL East. At the time, it looked like a reasonable deal, so I won't criticize the FO too much, as it was only hindsight that makes it look so bad. Personally the only players that I think did well upon leaving the Sox besides Manny were Damon and Lowe. And that's rounding up a little bit. My point is that the Sox are very capable and efficient at evaluating their own talent and it's relative worth (in money or other players)
  5. It's not as much jettisoning as it is getting "boned" in trades. I mean whether Gabbard has done something for the Rangers or not, the fact that we gave him up, Murphy, and Beltre (ouch) for Gagne was abominable. I mean it's not that we "jettisoned" Gabbard, as that would imply we DFA'd him or something, but we definitely got boned in that trade. On the other hand, to your credit many players haven't done well since leaving the Sox. Gabbard included, and in addition to DiNardo and Fossum, don't forget about Pedro, Trot Nixon, Garciaparra, Arroyo, Millar, and possibly Mueller. I'm not sure if Shea Hillenbrand would count either... So even though the Sox got screwed in the Texas trade (and possibly the 3-way Manny trade) they've done a great job at leaving players at precisely the right time.
  6. Yeah, I didn't see Pauley doing much for the Sox anyway. I'm not saying I really believe in Randor Beird, but it's at least worth a shot.
  7. Not to mention that baseball typically means no school, although since this year I'm on trimesters I'll be stuck in England until mid June. Oh well, at least I'll be able to turn 21 in the States.
  8. I think one of the reason for signing most of those players was for insurance. I doubt all of the question marks will be solved, but we should have the depth to compete even withstanding a few blows. Last year seemed to be an anomaly for injuries, and I personally doubt that 2009 will be as bad. Even so, we may not have as many "great" players as some other teams, but we have a very high number of above average/good players that should make our team one of the most balanced and threatening teams around. I think this offseason deserves an A- at the least. I'm definitely excited about baseball season, but that's not saying much since my football team has gone to hell, my hockey team isn't doing particularly well, and I'm always nervous about my NCAA basketball team.
  9. Imagine the dog fight that may/may not ensue for Halladay...
  10. I guess there's a difference between last year and this year, and I do predict the Jays to finish last as well, I guess I can see you making a point for 2009 to be a statistical anomaly in terms of pitching, but I don't see them becoming the O's, Rangers, Rockies etc...maybe it's something about the park but the Jays are typically a team that can pitch. Little else...but they can throw the ball.
  11. Didn't the Blue Jays have one of the best ERA's last year? I mean their offense is anemic and I don't know much of their fielding, but I thought pitching (particularly the bullpen) was a huge strength for the Blue Jays. I think they were towards the top in Runs Allowed per game (meaning they allowed around the least amount of total runs)
  12. I doubt that the offense is the Oriole's main problem.
  13. Us? What does anyone else have to do with it?
  14. The last thing this site needs is more a**holes...
  15. It's going to be batting practice when he's in the game. I hope Pauley can face us so we can tee-off against his flat high 80's fastball.
  16. Is anyone else hungry?
  17. Damn I missed quite the intellectual battle. People overhyping their own intelligence/education in an attempt to accentuate their own argument....name calling...and statistical manipulation. Sometimes I hate being 5 hours ahead or I would have been able to catch most of this.
  18. I thought that the Red Sox had a team ERA of 4.01 last year. With those catcher's numbers, how is that possible??
  19. I agree with the general consensus here...at least the waiting and head banging is over...well fiscally anyway...
  20. Yeah, if Theo didn't budge w/ Teixeira I doubt he'll budge with Varitek.
  21. Take care dude. I appreciate what you've done for the club but I wish it didn't have to end like this.
  22. lol at the Yankees. They would do such a thing...
  23. Yeah, he's certainly not winning over any of the Fenway Faithful...
  24. I knew it. I had been arguing that for a while on the ESPN boards and nobody ever brought that point up. Nobody ever corrected me, and I guess that's because I was right. People were still insisting that the Yankees were going to get Sheets or Ramirez etc and I said that I didn't think it could happen.
  25. Agreed...I blame the Padres for that more than anyone else...they can't expect great prospects and to have the other team pay for Peavy as well...that's just not how trades work...
