    I agree. I wouldn't give up Bogaerts unless Philly eats all of the money, but I'd give up Bradley or Cecchini with one of those top arms (Ranaudo/Barnes/Webster/RDLR/Owens) and a non top 10 prospect like Wilson/Britton/Brentz (if he weren't injured)/Marrero/Workman. I guess I'd include Middlebrooks if I'm including Bradley instead of Cecchini. That'd be the most I offer, and that'd be ONLY if Philly eats at least a quarter of Lee's salary, I'd ask for half. If I'm paying for all of Lee's salary then I don't give up any of our top 10 prospects. They can have Middlebrooks/Workman/Wilson at most.

    Back in time PTBNL's used to be forgettable. Now, I believe RBDL was a PTBNL, and the Cubs might get Neil Ramirez from the Rangers as a PTBNL. These things matter. Now the crappy PTBNL's tend to get replaced by international draft slots.

    If Kenny Williams was still the boss in Chicago I'd fully believe the latter.

    It seems to be something like they get only cash if Crain proves not to be healthy and a PTBNL if Crain proves to be healthy. I'm not going to attack the Sox for not making a move, but I do give Tampa credit here, I think they purchased a low risk high reward lottery ticket. (Depending on who the PTBNL is) I would have rather had Crain than Thornton, but I don't know what his medicals are. I just hope the Sox add a good reliever by Wednesday.

    Unfortunately we've done well at the exact opposite, turning quality relievers into unsuccessful starters.

    From what I had heard earlier there were 5 teams in on Brian Wilson, four of which in the NL. Considering we didn't get Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez we definitely have the money for Wilson (or to eat in a trade) Not that the MAG signing would have prevented us from having the money, but now we really have it. I'm pissed about Crain though, hopefully the piece they give up is of some value.

    Sounds like a cry for attention and a pathetic attempt to justify their high prices imo. Sad to see Crain go to the Rays, and the Braves get down. Hopefully there's a reliever left for us.

    I think every seller's asking price is a "go f*** yourself" at this point. Who knows what the Thornton for Jacobs trade started as.

    I think I'd be worried about the payroll going forward but as a whole I'd be ok with the deal. At most I'd give up would be someone like Ranaudo, paired with say Middlebrooks/Workman/Marrero/Brentz/Britton like prospects among which the Phillies can decide who they prefer. I wouldn't send all of those players, I just mean that level of prospect. I'm sure most other members here would hate the deal though.

    That's why my ultimate goal is to not trade anyone in our top 10. I'd start with Workman/Brentz (his level since he's injured)/Middlebrooks/Marrero/Britton etc. I'd rather stay pat than trade any of those guys for a starter not named Cliff Lee, and I think our only need is another reliever, and I think that can be obtained without one of our top 10 prospects. (Your list plus Rubby De La Rosa and Blake Swihart) Edit: Now that I think about it I believe Morales and Wilson are starting rehab appearances soon.

    That depends on how good our pitching coach is relative to the others in the league. I have no idea how good he is at correction motion's and getting better results from players than they had in recent years.

    It depends on the cost. But assuming his defense is better than Young's then he's worth a flyer. I'd "click here" for more details.

    Given Lee's contract I think there'd only be a few potential buyers, and without that competition I think that hurts Philly's chances of getting full value. But even then I think they can still get a very good package for Lee (especially if they eat some money) which could help them in the long run since they will likely have to rebuild in the face of Howard's disastrous contract, Papelbon's slightly less disastrous contract, and an aging Halladay/Utley.

    ....and let him pay Lee 25+ million for the next few years. If I'm paying all of that absurd money that Philly stupidly agreed to with Lee, then I'm not offering a prospect in the top 10.

    If one can relate that to his injury and not because the 30 HR's was a flukish performance. Did Ellsbury ever show that power potential in college/minors? (I'm not trying to be an ass I don't know that answer)

    I do think it's a valid excuse. It shows that it wasn't his fault and that it wasn't because his body is Drew family frail. Those flukish injuries can happen to anyone and shouldn't discount a contract unless it can reasonably effect future performance. (ie shoulder injury showing decline in arm strength/bat speed)

    In Ellsbury's defense, two of his injuries came from a big lumbering 3B plowing into his chest, and a middle infielder landing on top of his extended shoulder.

    I'd be happy with that deal, really happy if we didn't take Young and substituted the Phillies paying some of Lee's salary, but Brentz is injured (out for the year I think) so he'd no longer be a useful trade piece.
