He has to do what's best for his family. My guess is the Diamondback just gave him so much more money they he had to pull the trigger. Why move in season if there's no personal benefit?

The moves that were made in '22 (a) didn't get them below the CBT which set them back for '23 and ( didn't help them compete in '22. It was a total waste of a deadline. Like I said, he made a good trade with the Vaz deal, but received flak and then got gun-shy. In '23, he just quit on the team. -
I guess it worked out for him to opt out.

The AAA staff should be much more able to contribute this year than in previous years as some of the younger arms have advanced. I don't think the higher octane arms are quite ready as you already mentioned. No reason to rush those guys. I think there should be a good competition between Mata and Slaten for the final relief spot this Spring Training. We'll see how it shakes out. I'd be surprised if they went with both.

Song was just unexpected and crazy. I think people were more upset at how it would impact Song's development adversely (it did). Some were using it as proof that DD got something over on Bloom (he didn't). Nobody cared about Politi. Ward should have been traded before the protection deadline as he had enough value to go 1st overall. I understand they didn't want to put him on the 40 man, but at least trade him for some MiLB guy and get something back for it. Fernandez is this year's Politi. Drohan is a lesser version of Ward IMO. Should have been traded back in November when they knew they didn't want to protect him.

Fernandez is always injured and no big loss. Drohan couldn't compete in AAA and only had a very brief small sample of success in AA. Maybe Drohan will be good going forward? His pitching really sucked after he was promoted and no injury concerns were noted. If he liked Slaten and really wanted to draft him and worked up a deal with the Mets to bring him on board after they took him, it makes Breslow seems to be a pretty decisive guy. However, it's just the Rule 5 Draft. The vast majority of these guys amount to nothing of note.

@IanCundall New Red Sox RHP Justin Slaten takes one of the open 40-man spots. For Texas last year he had a 2.87 ERA & 1.07 WHIP w/86 K:20 BB in 59.2 IP (AA/AAA). Four pitch mix including 95-98 mph FB, 88-91 mph cutter, mid-80s SL & low-80s CB. Another intriguing power arm in the bullpen mix.

I think there are always "buckets" of prospects. Some of the decent buckets were filled higher at least according to outside scouts based on this year's Rule 5. However, the MiLB portion of the draft doesn't really bring back MEANINGFUL talent for the most part unless you are really hung up on guys like Kaleb Ort, Joe Jacques and Tyreque Reed. None of the MiLB guys were currently listed as top 60 guys on SoxProspects. Johnfrank Salazar and Brock Bell were interesting, but ultimately fungible. My guess is Breslow diferred to internal evaluations on who to protect and that's why these guys are now elsewhere.

I believe he dithered in '22 because he refused to trade JD or Sale when given the opportunity. -

@tylermilliken_ According to @ByRobertMurray, the Red Sox have sent minor-league reliever Ryan Ammons to the Mets. Ammons was selected in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Clemson. Worked as a reliever in college. Has yet to debut in pro ball. No word on the return yet.

You do think what he did was dithering though. You said as much in your definition. He refused the JD and Sale trades (bigger deal). What he accomplished didn't push the needle or help the ballclub in a meaningful way (nothing or next to nothing). -
Fernandez may not make it out of ST healthy. We'll see if both are returned.

@alexspeier Red Sox select catcher Michael (ed: "Mickey") Gasper -- a Merrimack, NH native -- from the Yankees' Double-A roster in the minor league Rule 5 draft. He hit .246/.361/.375 between AA and AAA this year. Sunrise. Sunset.
