Montgomery had 9 QS last year where he didn't get the win. Seems like s*** luck?
from TEX:
8/9 - 6 Innings - 2 r, loss
8/21 - 8 Innings - 0 R, no decision
9/18 - 7 Innings - 1 R, no decision
9/28 - 6 Innings - 1 R, no decision
He only earned a win in one game where he gave up more than 2 earned runs:
4/2 - 5 Innings - 3 ER, win
In 7 of his losses, he pitched better than the above game.
On his first AB, he took the first two pitches right down the middle for called strikes and then hit the third pitch into the OF for a single. His second AB was him just swinging wildly at pitches that were not close to the zone. It was the full Rafaela experience.
No real misplays by the defense except for the McGuire passed ball. Abreu also made a nice sliding catch in RF early on in the game that I thought would drop in. Sogard's glove seems good enough for SS.
The Red Sox had a very bad day on the bases with a pick off and 2 caught stealing. Not sure if the Reese McGuire one was just to get him back into the dugout so that he could get his gear back on.
I went to today’s Sox/Cards game. Here’s what I noticed.
Crawford was fine, but unimpressive. Walter pitched really well and struck out RH Arenado on a nice offspeed pitch. Slaten was a beast k’ing 2 in 1 inning. Hagenman worked a quick inning with only soft contact. Campbell was ok, but nothing special. Mustache is impressive in person. Olivarez was an absolute dumpster fire and almost hit 3 batters. Song was depressing to watch. His FB was 92-94, but couldn’t locate it in his warm ups (was sitting next to bullpen catcher) and looked even worse when he got into the game. He was pulled after giving up a run and loading the bases.
Sogard played the Pedro Ciriaco role put three charges into the ball. Meidroth got on base 3 times, but did so very quietly. Rafaela had a hit, stole a base, got picked off, struck out on a pitch in the dirt and made a JBJesque running catch in CF. McGuire had a horrible passed ball. Yorke had 3 ab’s and couldn’t hit the ball out of the IF grass.
Old friends Ryan Fernandez and Nick Robertson both pitched for the Cards. Robertson looked like s***. Fernandez missed giving up a leadoff oppo bomb to Kavadas by 5 ft. He then finished the inning with 3 k’s (kavadas, Rosier, Miller) and 1 bb.
Roger Dean Stadium was a good time though.
I'm not sure the sale of a team is really contingent on the current prospect pipeline either. I think the historical value of the Red Sox and Fenway Park is far more important than anything going on in 2024.
Even if local fans stop showing up, a lot of visiting fans will come due to the balanced schedule. He has a a few more years to coast before the rubber will really meet the road.
I doubt they are selling the team. They are using FSG as a complete sports portfolio and the Sox are one of the best investments in it, including Fenway park. If they sold now, they'd most likely be looking for another MLB team to buy at some point. Unless they were anticipating a drop in valuations, it doesn't make sense.
They are reducing the payroll because Henry believes the Sox SHOULD be better when they spend less money. He still pines for the days when he was courting Billy Beane and undervalued assets. Now, all teams are going for the same guys using virtually the same metrics. The Sox recently have set their valuations on guys, refuse to budge (ex: Bogey, Betts) and the market shows how far off they are. For Henry, it's more about a pissing contest than anything else. It's about him just being proven right because he's so much smarter than everyone else.
This is based on BOS trading and FA's, not industry experience though. Roger left via FA and had a long career. The Lester FA deal was pretty good. It also ignores bad trades like Drew Pomeranz.
I underlined the guys who have a chance to provide something to the pen this season. I'll talk about them from least likely to most likely. Luetge has been effective before ('21-'22), but is coming to the end of his career. It's likely that this is one of his final stops. Hagenman struggled a little after leaving the Dodgers org, but it's not surprising given WOO's catching options. I think he has a bit of a bounceback season and is a prime candidate to be a guy that gets a bump from the new pitching philosophy. Chris Murphy is a decent enough arm and will probably get similar playing time to last year. He's not really a top tier guy. Joely is a perfectly fine LH reliever. He's great if you can stash him in AAA for depth. Weissert is just a tick up from Joely IMO. Zack Kelly was pretty good when healthy. He's not a big k guy, but induces weak contact and doesn't walk guys. Can be a solid 7th inning reliever. If he's back to being healthy, he's the best of the guys I underlined IMO.
Guerrero is interesting, but I think he's not ready. He walks way too many guys right now and I'd like to see him succeed at AAA for a whole year before adding him to the 40 man. German was a high octane arm at one point, but needs a lot of work. He's just a one pitch pitcher right now due to command issues. I don't think Walter is worth a 40 man spot. I really don't know anything about Criswell. There's an outside chance we see Fitts this season, but more likely it'd be Gambrell.
Per fWAR or per real life?
TOR - Gausman, Berrios, Bassitt, Kikuchi, Manoah
BOS - Giolito, Bello, Pivetta, Crawford, Houck
About 7 games just based on the rotation? If the Sox had the Jays' rotation they'd be a 87 win team probably.
