  1. They got a new CBO that wouldn't have signed that contract.
  2. It was one year (2012) to get under the luxury tax. He didn't have to deal with that every year.
  3. JH will always say "it's the CBO's decision" and then just fire the CBO when things don't work every 4 years. The next CBO can just say "I don't like that contract because I didn't negotiate it."
  4. Ben had the salary dump for a lot of reasons that we've gone over. It wasn't simply to cut salary, but because that team actually had internal issues. The 2011 team fell off at year end. There was the chicken and beer media driven nonsense. They tarred and feathered Tito on the way out of town. They brought in Valentine as muscle and kept most of the same players. The players basically crapped all over that idea and didn't perform very well (notably AGon). Sox wanted to get out from under Crawford's salary (JH inexplicably showed up on the radio and declared that he never wanted to sign that contract in the first place). They decided to attach Beckett to the deal with AGon (squeaky wheel) and CC (bad contract) only because it's the only way to get rid of CC and actually get value back (what little actually came back). Filling up a roster with mid level talent and making a playoff push actually counts as spending! It worked too!
  5. Losing 12% of their runs takes them from being near Yankee level to near Rays level. Above average, but no longer elite.
  6. This must be that ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE that Raffy was disrupting.
  7. They still need to work on fastballs though! I think they have gotten a little too far away from that IMO. Offspeed stuff is great, but they can't completely ignore the HEAT.
  8. Rob Refsnyder replacement? Or trade fodder?
  9. A lot people fine with Breslow underpeforming and not doing his job I guess. Communication was something HE said he needed to be better about. 🫠
  10. I don't believe he had more leeway than Ben. I believe DD had more leeway than Bloom or Breslow. What has changed?
  11. If not, he'd get taken in the Rule 5 draft this time. If they don't believe in him, they'll deal him at the deadline. If he's here on August 1, he's going to get added to the 40 man at some point.
  12. They can have him. How much of the salary do they want to cover? That will depend on the return.
  13. No reason to do until the end of the season or if he's needed for a callup.
  14. I wasn't a fan of all his moves, but at least there was a coherent philosophy.
  15. Huh? My point is about a larger sample size wherein Narvaez, Toro, et al see their stats diminish from now until September 30th. The last 8 games are just a preamble to the offensive woes we could see the rest of the summer. Over and over, I've had concerns about running out Spring Training lineups and expecting playoff performances this year. It doesn't seem likely to me. This group will have ups and downs. There will be a learning curve. Take the lumps this year so that they'll be ready to go for next year.
  16. 1 out of 5 good moves ain't bad. Also, the Campbell extension isn't a lot of money.
  17. It just shows an organization that often doesn't seem to know what it is doing and makes hasty decisions after bad decisions. Sign Crawford. Trade Crawford. (bad contract per JH!) Trade Lester due to age. Sign older Price. Don't extend Mookie. Extend Sale and Eovaldi instead. Trade Mookie. (can't afford the extension!) Xander leaves. (fan backlash) Extend Devers. (because of backlash?) Trade Sale. (wins CY after) Offer 700M to eventual DH Soto. (legit?) Trade Devers (underwater contract for a DH!) There just doesn't seem to be a clear strategy here. It's all very confusing and not well thought out.
  18. If they get any sort of offer for Story, Breslow would say yes before the other team could reconsider.
  19. Bullpen, bullpen, bullpen? Houck looked ROUGH last night for WOO. Kutter is a back end guy, but could fill in if there's an injury. Harrison has some work to do in WOO before they'll call him up. It may be a while.
  20. This is just rewriting history for Breslow's sake. Breslow is intentionally not communicating with players. This has not come up before.
  21. With the Yankees, if you can slow down Judge, the rest of the lineup seems very ordinary.
  22. Potential trade targets: Bats: Josh Naylor Ozuna (already rumored trade for Devers) SP: Eflin Freddy Peralta Heaney Jake Bird RP: Raisel Iglesias Kyle Finnegan Dennis Santana
  23. What specifically about those stats do you not like? 1. I'm worried about the offense because of the makeup of the roster this year (not long term). 2. The offense is in a funk, but is being bailed out by the rotation that is balling out. 3. Without a big bopper at the top of the lineup, it's infinitely harder to see who is going to carry this lineup going forward. 4. I like Bregman, but his 158 wRC+ is the highest it has been since 2019 and seems like it make regress some as well.
  24. Right. Stats you don't like are bad. I get it. The offense is not going well right now. They are leaning on young guys that will struggle at times. Toro will regress. Narvaez will regress. Story is not consistent. Duran is not 2024 Duran. Losing Devers is going to be a problem for this offense.
