Sabremeterics was about finding market inefficiencies, not about propping up hitting. Small market teams started to favor defense once OBP was overvalued again.

Shaw played well last year, Sandoval did not. Shaw has excelled in ST this year, Sandoval has continued to be underwhelming. Would it be a mistake to start Shaw on opening day? It could be. Would it be a mistake to start Sandoval on opening day? It could be. People just prefer the guys who try harder. And it just so happens that the guy who is trying harder, is also playing better in every phase of the game.

"Smith will begin the season on the disabled list after an MRI revealed a strained flexor mass muscle in his right forearm, Mike Silverman of the Boston Herald reports." Per the chart, if he had the Yankees facilities he'd be good to go. However, since he's stuck with the Red Sux he might as well get his arm amputated. -
