    I really didn't want to fall down this rabbit hole. Hazing by senpai (upperclassmen), who often act as surrogate disciplinarians of their kohai (lower classmen) is also systemic and involves a variety of tortures. Ichiro Suzuki, as a 10th-grader on his high school club, was forced to kneel on the rim of a lidless garbage can for an extended period of time as punishment for overcooking the rice in the team dormitory. On other occasions he had to kneel with a bat between his calves and buttocks. He described these sessions as unbearably painful. Such practices may continue into the pros. In last year's Japan Series, we were treated to the sight of Giants catcher and captain Shinnosuke Abe striding out to the mound and slapping second-year pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura in the head to scold him for a lapse in control. "Snap out of it!" he yelled. It was all on nationwide TV. Sawamura's reaction? An embarrassed smile.

    Where does Ottavino rank in blown saves over that time period? Hint: it's the same as Barnes.

    That's why I put it at 50/50 that either one is better. They are about the same pitcher going into this season. Of course, we'll have much more information on these guys going into 2022. Right now, there's just too many questions on both.

    @jcmccaffrey -Rodriguez is scheduled to pitch five innings tomorrow and Bogaerts is scheduled to play his first game at shortstop -Danny Santana is still in the hospital with the foot infection and it's going to be a while before he's ready to go -Cora confirms they'll use a five-man rotation

    Sawamura has a reputation of being wild. He's probably most similar to Joe Kelly in that regards (except he has better movement).

    I think most casual Sox fans are underwhelmed by his signing just because it's been so long since he was a top end guy. Kluber would have been the more interesting signing to casual fans. There's a 50/50 chance that he's better than Kluber this year.

    They were 17th in pen ERA and 19th in WHIP in 2019. I think they'll be around there again this season. It's not that much of a stretch to say they could be "average" (13th - 17th in MLB).
