  1. Not a good morning in Red Sox camp. Matt Barnes has tested positive for COVID. Matt Andriese is out today for contact tracing, and others could be as well. Here’s what we know so far.
  2. @Twins The entire Minnesota Twins organization is saddened by the death of current bench coach Mike Bell, who passed away today at the age of 46 from cancer. At the request of the Bell family, we will play tonight’s game in honor of Mike.
  3. Tyler Austin/Aaron Judge
  4. @redsoxstats Frank German, the prospect the Red Sox got in the trade along with Ottavino, is touching 96-97 mph today. He's never pitched above A-ball and is facing Rays regulars, Zunino got him for a homer and Tsutsugo hit into a double play. Got Margot to strikeout on a nasty breaking ball.
  5. Seems like he hasn't lost much speed. If he could only stay healthy...
  6. @SoxProspects Thaddeus Ward taken out after walking his third batter. Final line on the day is 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. Ward's ability to stick as a starter will depend on continued improvement of fastball command and refinement of his secondary pitches.
  7. @redsoxstats Duran now has 16 strikeouts in 42 plate appearances this spring, 38%. Even when he was slapping the ball all over the place in high-A he struck out 20% of the time and in double-A it was 24%... so something else to monitor when his games get going in May.
  8. Strange-Gordon was just released. Don't see the Sox bringing him in on a MiLB deal. If Arroyo had faltered in ST, maybe.
  9. Porcello is still unsigned. Why not kick the tires???
  10. I think the current plan is for him just to miss one start, but if he goes on IL they should definitely promote somebody. I don't know how much Seabold has thrown as he's only been in one official ST game.
  11. Probably Andriese.
  12. @SoxProspects Today's roster moves: Optioned Jonathan Araúz to the Alternate Training Site Reassigned Chris Herrmann, Danny Santana, César Puello, Michael Gettys, Kevin McCarthy, and Marcus Walden to the minor leagues. @SPChrisHatfield 28 players still on the roster - remaining moves will be: - IL Brasier - choose between Brewer and Valdez - either activate Cordero/option Chavis/DFA someone (Schreiber) or keep Chavis up.
  13. I prefer a lineup that includes Kike's speed and Duran's speed. I also like Duran better than Chavis and believe his upside is better than what we've seen out of Chavis the past year and a half. Chavis' 660 OPS since 5/23/19 doesn't leave me feeling warm and fuzzy at the moment.
  14. This is what was said right after his last start: @bradfo Eduardo Rodriguez done for the day after just two innings. Gave apprearance of someone with a dead arm.
  15. @alexspeier Sox are going to evaluate Rodriguez in the next few days, once he can throw a bullpen, to see where he slots in the rotation. It’s possible he only needs to be pushed back and might not land on injured list. Sox characterize this as a precaution. Well, fanfreakintastic.
  16. @ChrisCotillo Red Sox have 34 healthy players (including Cordero) in camp and 26 spots. Remaining NRIs are McCarthy, Walden, Herrmann, Pereda, Gettys, Puello. Of that group, only McCarthy seems to have a shot of making the team. It's almost that time of the year where we fret about the 14th man in the pen. It may be McCarthy? https://www.fangraphs.com/players/kevin-mccarthy/15240/stats?position=P I forgot this guy was even on the team until I saw his name yesterday. Has anyone seen him pitch?
  17. Personally, I'd go with Duran and stick with 13 batters when Cordero gets back. I'd do a straight platoon with Renfroe/Cordero. Duran would start in CF. Verdugo would start in RF. Kiké is 2B. Marwin acts as super sub.
  18. @PeteAbe #RedSox at #Rays (1:05 p.m., MLB Network): Arroyo 2B, Duran CF, Martinez RF, Cordero LF, Chavis 1B, Herrmann C, Downs SS, De La Guerra 3B, Puello DH, and Ward RHP The definition of a B Squad game. Ward has yet to give up a run this ST. He only has 2.1 innings so far though. We'll see how long they let him go.
  19. I don't think he's gone over the limit yet. I think he's so personable that he knows what each person's limit is. I also bet that he had that specific conversation with Beni back in 2019 about bulking up.
  20. @RedSox Bobby Dalbec leads the majors in HRs this spring. That's good. Very good.
  21. Arauz needs more time playing everyday in AA/AAA. He's not fully developed yet, so sticking him on the bench would do him no favors. I think Chavis has the inside edge if Cordero is out. Would be interesting for them to give Duran some run though.
  22. I have zero problem with what Cora said.
  23. Cal Ripken Sr, Jr, f*** Face Ray Boone, Bob, Aaron, Bret Sox: Tony Armas, Jr Mo Vaughn, Greg (cousins)
  24. @byJulianMack The Red Sox like what they have seen from Franchy Cordero so far, in terms of his progression. There's still a chance he makes Opening Day roster. Saturday will be a big test of that, Cora said.
