  1. Steamer has him projected at 650, so no it wouldn't be a surprise. We've also seen the rollercoaster ride with JBJ. You need to ride with him when he's hot and hope his cold stretches don't last. He production can be very volatile.
  2. Ignore one volcanic season of 2016 and there's no decline. WRC+ by year: 2016 118 2017 89 2018 90 2019 89 2020 119 2021 35 Before 2021, where's the decline, moon? I don't think anyone on here expects JBJ to ever replicate 2016. It seems more like 2016 and 2021 are the aberrations.
  3. I wanted them to sign Stroman more than anything else. They never gave any indication they were going that route. JBJ came at the very end of the last CBA. I don't think the pitching contracts have any impact on JBJ and vice versa.
  4. They were obviously not comfortable with that ERod deal. If you ignore FIP, I can see some of the concerns. It's a lot of guaranteed money for a guy who is only a 3rd of 4th starter.
  5. 1. They are taking on the contract for only 2 years, not the full 3 the Brewers signed him to. 2. The value of the prospects matters regardless if the ever play in Boston. 3. The trade for JBJ shouldn't have any affect on who else Bloom signs. It's clear he wasn't going to nab top tier SP talent this year. They weren't even linked to anybody before the deal came about. 4. The offseason is not over. Bloom has more work to do.
  6. Some would even say that Mookie for Verdugo straight up would have been a good deal. Getting Downs and Wong are just a bonus. Also, I believe Wong had the highest WAR/162 for any catcher on the Sox. Seems like not liking him is weird!
  7. It's not about being giddy. It's about knowing the inherent value of having a bunch of guys in your system. Most won't pan out! However, you have a pipeline to keep payroll costs down. You have a pipeline because the players are fungible assets that you can deal at the deadline to bolster your MLB team.
  8. I've already go a TRADE JBJ thread in my drafts, but at least give him some credit. One bad year isn't always a sign that the player will never be good again. Maybe the switch to the new league was a bigger adjustment than he thought it would be? Maybe he'll be more comfortable back in Fenway? I'm sure he's going to get a big pop on Opening Day from the fans.
  9. At this point, Sale opting out would be a good thing. I'm not sure he's worth the contract going forward.
  10. I'm doing my best to not say anything ageist.
  11. I'm guessing he'll be about 720 OPS with solid defense. 1.5-2 fWAR player.
  12. A 700 season would be a surprise? He's only had one season below that mark since 2015. In his past 5 years, he's had one 800 season, three 700 seasons and one season below 700.
  13. ARod's first contract was worth it. I would equate the 250M contract signed over 20 years ago with the monster deals signed now.
  14. Agree with almost everything except the last sentence.
  15. If your offense is going to dip down, you can stay at a similar production level by adding defense.
  16. Even if he replicates 2021 in 2022, he becomes harder to deal since there is less team control.
  17. That's why you obtain as many as possible. The more you have, the more likely you'll have one pan out. A strong pipeline helps because you can have cheap labor come up to the MLB team so that you can afford more expensive contracts for top tier talent. You can also spin those prospects to other teams to fill a hole on your own.
  18. 1. Bloom values defense. 2. JBJ's value was at a low point after a dreadful 2021 and is likely to rebound somewhat. 3. Bloom values prospects. 4. Hunter was getting to a contract amount where it was likely that his performance would no longer match what he was being paid.
  19. "We" as in Sox fans, sure. However, I think some other teams have had some fun offseasons recently.
  20. I think Bloom is also betting on JBJ's glove over the short term.
  21. How so? What is the compromise that the players need to give? The players haven't been able to even negotiate since they were locked out very early on. I'm sorry Kimmi, but I don't think you've been following this closely enough.
  22. How? The players are the ones being locked out.
