Not sure how I feel about this. I like AROD, hes a great player but that much money? I'm not sure.
One side of the argument is, Losing Schilling, Lowell, Hinske, Clement is about 35M off the books right there. They can fill in the rotation spot with a cheap veteran or with Lester/Buchholz(also very cheap) That means the SP rotation(if they stay healthy) is set for the next 3 or 4 seasons, maybe longer. Youk,Pedroia, Lugo, Drew Crisp, Ellsbury, Papelbon,Okijihma,Delcarmen, Papi are all signed long term( 3+ yrs). So in all honesty theres not alot we have to replace over the next few yrs except the typical crap we throw together in the BP and bench players. Add in the fact that if we get AROD this means Manny will be traded or they will kepp him for next season and most likely no pich up his options. So theres another 20M gone after next season. In theory, they could decline manny's options and sign him to a new deal possibly for less, but who knows.
So money wise the Sox could sign AROD and only go up in payroll by 5%( i think thats what the article said). So it's not out of the realm of possibility.
