  1. Welcome to the world of the delta variant. 99.5% of those dying are unvaccinated but most recent data shows maybe a 65% prevention rate of the delta variant with Pfizer or Moderna. Likely far less with J and J as that one had a lower efficacy to begin with. This means vaccines have relegated this to a cold or flu at worst, but with strict testing protocols, they’re gonna catch every breakthrough case
  2. Durran is interesting, but few players come up with a vengeance and never struggle.
  3. That Henry Davis was chosen number one is a reason why they need to allow the trade of draft picks
  4. Kavadas is an 11th rounder, but he is also a college senior. He will sign for peanuts
  5. Surprised they only gave the Sox an A-. The Mayer pick wins the draft for them. Snagging a boom or bust player like Fabian in the second kills it, even if he doesn’t make enough contact going forward. McDonough sounds like a solid add with a really high floor. Two HSers thereafter who’ve got promise. The catcher from Florida isn’t gonna be a catcher long term but he can take. The other pitchers are wings and prayers with stuff over production. Bloom crushed this draft. He got some high floors, some high ceilings and a good mix to add to the Sox system desperately in need of depth
  6. 2. Brendan Beck- RHP Stanford 4 pitch mix, sits 90-92, tops out 94. Average curve, slider and change. Impeccable command. While I don’t hate the player, I hate the value. He’s a high floor player drafted in the second round after reaching a bit for a hitter in the first round. I thought the Yanks would have saved some money on round one and gone for a high ceiling guy/more expensive player in round 2, but they didn’t. Beck is a senior, so he has literally no financial leverage. 3. Brock Selvidge- LHP HS Good frame, flashed power with a fastball upwards of 96. Best secondary offering is a good slider. Curve and change are works in process. This kid is the higher upside player, although still considered somewhat of a reach. With his frame and his age, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s sitting in the 95-96 range and topping out close to 100 as he fills out. 4. Cooper Bowman 2B Kentucky U Good hitter, average power, blazing speed. Already filled out his smaller frame. Arm is a minus, so he’s likely confined to 2b or CF. I like this pick. I like good hitters first and this one comes with reasonable power and speed. Biggest knock is defense and the fact that he’s limited long term in his positioning 5. Tyler Hardman 1B Oklahoma U I asked for hitters and this kid is a hitter, pretty much only. Slow as s***, likely to end up relegated to 1B or a poor man’s LF. But the kid can mash. Big 12 batting champ. Hit 8 homers on the cape in 2019. Kid has plus raw power, advanced pitch recognition and plus hit tool. He fell because he is almost certainly going to end up as a 1b.
  7. It’s a safe pick after another safe pick. The guy will move through the minors fast as most polished starters do, but he doesn’t move the needle. I doubt the yanks spend slot on either of these two guys, so they better do more than just pocket the extra
  8. The f***? Brendan Beck? #99 prospect, no power? f*** that
  9. I’m hoping for Baez for the Yanks
  10. Fabian is a bit time bat, should have been a first rounder but the worry was making contact. That’s a solid second round pick
  11. If you have followed my thoughts on the draft the past decade or so, you know I have hated more than half our first rounders. Hated Bleich, Heathcott, Culver, Bichette, Kaprielian, Holder, Rutherford, Seigler and Volpe. Kaprielian has finally turned it around. Volpe has been way better than I thought.
  12. Here’s the deal with the Yankees shift in strategy. Prior to drafting Austin Wells first round last year, the Yanks had either gone pitcher or athlete outside of 2 selections (Jagielo and Judge in 2013) CJ Henry 2006- athlete, great speed, hit tool lagging Slade Heathcott 2009- high level speed, great arm, bat lagging Kyle Holder 2015- whiz defensively, sucks as a hitter Blake Rutherford 2016- speed, good arm, bat with promise Anthony Seigler 2018- phenomenal defensive catcher, rocket arm, good speed, minus hit tool Anthony Volpe 2019- great speed, glove, hands, hit tool average The only guy above who progressed to a plus hit tool now or ever did is Volpe. The rest never developed the bat and ended up flops. That’s where the Yanks need to focus. If a guy can hit, he will progress and while he may not end up in the Bronx, he will add value via trade. Hitting is the toughest thing to do in baseball. If a guy comes in with a great hit tool, then you’re already ahead of the game
  13. And I’d expect nothing more from Sox fans!
  14. He only saw 16 fastballs over 93? That doesn’t even register. He may have taken 10 of them. By your numbers above, it looks like he only made an out on 3 of the 16, one of them was ball 4 and the others were fouled off, early count strikes or balls. IE, absolutely useless stat. Then again, his lack of experience vs the high heat is something that will be tested early for sure
  15. In the age of maximizing value, it makes little sense to bring him up before he’s 22-23 when he’s more physically mature unless he’s just racking the minors
  16. I make this thread every year. There are many more picks to come
  17. 1. Trey Sweeney- lefty hitting shortstop with a plus bat, average power, below average speed for the position. Expected to move to 3b, but his bat should play up to the position and power should rise as he gets older. I loved our first rounder last year (lefty swinging Austin Wells) and I love this one too. The draft nicks has him as a second rounder, so be it. He’s a pure bat guy, and those are hard to find. Cashman et al have done a reasonably good job replenishing the position player talent at the lower levels after years of splurging on athletes who could not hit. This kid’s bat will likely see him through the lower levels rapidly and his ascent should really be apparent next season as an advanced hitter in A ball
  18. I actually like the Yankees pick. Two years in a row, that might be a record. I absolutely hate it when the Yanks pick position players who are "a sum of their parts" or great athletes who need the bat to develop. It never f***ing does. But, this Sweeney kid can mash. Lefty batter with line drive swing, should have good power at the next level. Drafted as a SS, but he will be a 3b long term.
  19. Mayer isn’t coming up in a year or two. He’s a HS shortstop. Best case (and I’m talking fairy tale land) he spends two full seasons on the minors and he debuts some time mid 2024
  20. Mayer to the Sox. It’s a good pick for the Sox
  21. Mayer to the Sox seems pretty legit now
  22. If Mayer goes to Detroit, the Sox could go in any direction thereafter
  23. Gutless sacks of s***
  24. He better have the team playing desperate. 8 out of 10 games out of the break are vs Boston. We need to win at least 6 of those to start making headway
