  1. no you cannot. The team is committed to $18 million. You could look at it as 1 year for $ 18 million if he blows up like 40 year olds are apt to do.
  2. I'm an advocate of smart management. In the end, they didn't trade an unproven prospect for proven talent. In the end, they swapped a blue chip prospect for 2 busted prospects and $. Keep on trying Bell. I can do this all day long.
  3. so we got Webster and rubby and $ for Rizzo. Terrible move.
  4. And this translates as proof that XB will likely have a career similar to Dewey? Or is it anecdotal evidence of what is possible? It is far more probable that he will not have have a Dewey like career.
  5. And if he falls off a cliff in 2015 which would not be unusual for a 40 year old, they would have a $9 million sunk cost in 2016. I would have increased the AAV in 2015 to something like $11 or 12 million and taken a club option for $ 8 million for 2016. I would consider a player option for $ 8 million if he pitches more than 60 innings in 2015. A 2 year contract for a 40 year old is never a good idea regardless of the AAV.
  6. But those trades did net us Alex Webster and Rubby for Rizzo.
  7. What makes you think it is valid to extrapolate and project XB s future performance when in almost 600 plate appearances he OPS'd .660 had an OBP of .297 and a whopping 46 RBI? Let me remind you that you were making similar projections about Automatic Out Jr when he changed his stance and had about 10 good games. That didn't turn out to be even close to accurate as he got even worse. These projections based on a guy's best segment of the season are worthless and completely invalid. Most of his production was in garbage time in September after the team had been out of the race for at least a month. The rap against him is that he chokes when it matters. It remains to be seen if that criticism is valid. Let's see how he does when they come out of the gate in April.
  8. I would have given him $12 million for 1 season with team option of $8 million for a second season.
  9. He might be, but the organization probably would haqve kept AGon if he had been popping 35 HRs out of the park each year. If the guy carries a wrecking ball bat, you can tolerate his personality.
  10. He's a good compiler of stats. He's not a good clubhouse guy from what I could see and he lacked leadership qualities from what I heard and read. He's a guy that I was not sorry to see leave, especially after the drop off in his Home Run prodction in the second half of 2011.
  11. He doesn't suck. He is a very good compiler of stats. But I am glad that AGon is gone.
  12. While I do think that the team's player development and scouting operations deserve close scrutiny, I don't agree that the only way to rebuild a team is to tear it all down first. I agree with Ben that there are a lot of ways to rebuild a team.
  13. We are better off without him. The guy is a loser. To paraphrase him, it was all part of God's plan that we sent him back to the west coast.
  14. Maybe Manny Trillo. He did have a 17 year career.
  15. I do want immediate results, but not from the prospects. I understand that they take time to reach their potential. They have to be worked into a lineup with supporting veteran players to carry the load while the kids develop. This past season too many young players were thrown into a sink or swim situation with not enough solid veteran help and they all sank. An organization needs to mix these guys in as they are ready, but not like we are the Montreal Expos fielding 8 rookies. Some guys will have to wait their turn or be traded. I have been a Red Sox fan for 48 years. Patience is not a shortcoming of mine.
  16. Manny? Which Manny?
  17. This is a bit of an overstatement.
  18. He's a great compiler of stats and he really thrives on lousy teams. As far as putting a team on his back like Big Papi when it matters most, AGon is not that guy.
  19. I like your analogy to nutrition, but I don't think that we have to stink while getting the player development and scouting operations healthy. I think they need to bite the bullet and clear out the people in those operations.
  20. All those guys are cheap, and they are all either not very good or they stink. I hold out a lot of hope for Betts.
  21. I don't think they are very far from being competitive. That doesn't preclude me from also agreeing with Doji's criticism of the scouting and player development and I think they need to bring in new blood in those areas. Despite that, I think the team can be rebuilt to be competitive in 2015 with trades and acquisitions, but I am not very confident that they will do what needs to be done.
  22. I am surprised that they signed him for 2 seasons at age 40.
  23. yes, I replied your facetious statement with sarcasm. I didn't think we were arguing about an issue. We are a last place team and the whole organization except for David Ortiz s*** all over themselves. They have a lot of work to do.
  24. Memo to the Red Sox front office. Everyone can take vacation for the next 5 years since we won the CHampionship last year.
  25. I can't disagree with this indictment of the organization. After watching Bradley and Middlebrooks bomb and XB underwhelm us, I think the problem is not limited to pitching. They need to take a good hard look at their scouting and talent development operations.
