  1. That was 2003 Pedro who was already a shadow of himself. 1998-99 Pedro has the Babe screwing himself into the ground and making a big breeze fanning. 2003 Pedro drills him in the ass. He doesn't let him beat him. Pedro got beat because a roided up Giambi got him twice in 2003. Post PED Giambi who lost 25 lbs of muscle in the 2003 off season has no chance against Pedro.
  2. And Rick Miller too. He was the best of them all. He just couldn't hit enough to play everyday on those clubs.
  3. When Dewey first came up at the end of '72 I think, we still had Reggie Smith, Tommy Harper, Ben Olgivie and Yaz had to play first base. It was hard to make an impression with those guys out there.
  4. Rice had much better speed than some people remember. He wasn't graceful, but he got the job done at Fenway and on the road. He handled the spacious LF in Yankee Stadium just fine.
  5. Tartabull to Elston Howard to get Ken Berry at the plate. Howard had to leap for the throw.
  6. Betts does have tools that Evans didn't have. That is true, but Evans was phenomenal defensively from the start. He could run, chase down flies and he had a howitzer for an arm. He didn't develop into a great RFer. That was his reputation from the beginning. Betts can chase flies and is an excellent OFer, but the arm is just not there to compare to Dewey. He has a second baseman's arm.
  7. In the words of Pedro, "Dig up the Babe. I'll drill him in the ass."
  8. Rice became a excellent outfielder. And yes he did suffer from comparisons to Yaz.
  9. My recollection is that Evans suffered a severe beaning early on in his career that effected him for a while. Evans was a far superior outfielder to Betts. Betts is not even in the same zip code as Evans.
  10. That group of outfielders played together through 1977. Check out their 1977 numbers..
  11. The Red Sox have to hope that the human donut works hard to get back to where he can compete for a starting job. It is the only chance that they have to squeeze any value out of his contract.
  12. Our offense and the order of our lineup is not a problem (even if we picked the names out of a hat). It is the pitching stupid.
  13. If Buch gets into 2 or 3 games a week, maybe he will build some arm strength that will eventually help him if he gets back into the rotation. I wonder if being in the bullpen will allow him to pitch past his usual expiration date of the All Star Break.
  14. It is a very different game today. The guys on Golden State hit three pointers like they are layups. They are incredible. I like watching the playoffs, but generally I don't watch the NBA because the first 3 quarters are meaningless. You just need to watch the last 2 minutes.
  15. I know that the Dodgers brought him up. Is he considered to be a finished product?
  16. General anesthesia at that age is a very big risk. Even if they survive the surgery, they can have many other complications that can be life-threatening. My mother in law had 3 surgeries after age 88, and after each surgery her cognitive abilities diminished drastically. These are not easy decisions. I hope that it works out for her.
  17. Sorry about that. That will put her on her back for a while.
  18. Yes, Yaz was moving out as Rice, Lynn and Evans were starting out. However, Yaz played a full season in the OF in 1977 and half a season in 1978, so he did play a considerable number of games alongside Lynn and Evans. He also won a gold glove for LF in 1977. When he wasn't out there, Rice was out there, and although Jim Ed was built like a body builder, his athleticism was under rated.
  19. It is a great disappointment. He is a special hitter.
  20. If you want to talk about athleticism, Fred Lynn played freshman football at USC on a football scholarship. Rice was a football star who was offered scholarships from Nebraska, North Carolina and Clemson. He was an All-State kick returner in North Carolina. Yaz was a two sport star growing up on Long island. The only reason that he wasn't a 3 sport star was because his father would not let him play football. His high school basketball scoring record in Suffolk County, Long Island held up for about 40 years. There was some pretty decent athleticism in that 75 outfield.
  21. It is a long climb to surpass that Outfield of Yaz, Lynn and Evans. They could do it all.
  22. Gibbons is an idiot. Estrada shuts the Yankees down on 3 hits over 8 innings making them look helpless, but he goes to his bullpen in the 9th and his closer is not available. The Yankees end up bringing the tying run to the plate against the bums in the Jays pen.
  23. At the game mojo for JBay!!
  24. It will be very interesting to see ERod's stuff. I have been hearing that his velocity has been down.
  25. Yaz, Lynn and Evans were pretty darn good defensively. And the back up CFer, Rick Miller was the best of the bunch.
