  1. They would if their only other option to feed their family was a 9-5 job.
  2. He was the target of every sportswriter in Boston, and the print press had a monopoly over the news back then. They went after him all the time. And he got booed a lot. If anything, it was harder for players in the 60's and 70's, because there were no long term guaranteed contracts, and when your career was over you had to get another job unless you were a superstar. Today, Nick Punto is set for life.
  3. There would be a very long sign up list -- even at 60 k. Oil Can Boyd is 56 years old and can't pitch anymore, but he still plays independent baseball. He just loves it.
  4. They live privileged lives. There is no doubt about that. I remember at Yaz's Hall of Fame induction ceremony he said that he would often be asked about how he handled pressure. I will paraphrase his answer: "What pressure? Pressure is raising and providing comfort for one's family. That's pressure. Playing professional baseball is not pressure." It is difficult. It is hard work, but let's not elevate it to a "grind." Everything is done for these guys. Every need they have is taken care of by someone else. They are only responsible to get themselves prepared to play (and they get help with that too) and play. Phil Rizzuto who prbably never made more than $30k as a player talked about how he was unprepared for the real world after his playing days were over. He was shocked to learn that he had to carry his own bags when traveling or that he had to make his own travel arrangements. It is a very pampered life.
  5. That is what I am hoping for.
  6. He will probably catch on with Tampa and resume beating us.
  7. Can't score double digits regularly, and in the last week we lost games where we scored 9 runs twice and 8 runs.
  8. ER is not the answer for #2. Darwin Barney is not a masher.
  9. And there goes Swihart's trade value.
  10. Red Sox fans tend to be snobs about the ALE, but they have not been the premier division for a number of years. The Central has been a better division and prior to this year the west had been tougher too.
  11. If i were the owner of the Orioles, I would have that mayor run out of town. The mayor and the rest of their crooked politicians are pleading for empowerment zones and for businesses to move there and create jobs. A week of riots is not going to have the effect of inducing businesses to line up to invest in Baltimore, nor were the businesses that got burned to the ground going to be anxious to rebuild.
  12. Thunder needs to stay away from making game threads.
  13. For many years when the Red Sox or Yankees played the Orioles, Camden Yards would be packed, even when the O's were terrible. Red Sox fans and Yankee fans made the trip in droves. I would go to Camden Yards at least once a year. I have been noticing that despite the O's and Red Sox fighting for first place that there are plenty of empty seats in Camden Yards the last couple of games. I guess that is what happens when you burn down your city for a week trapping fans inside the ballpark for their own safety. I always loved going there and eating crab cakes at the inner harbor, but I heard a few horror stories about Red Sox fans that were there when all hell broke lose in that city so I will not be going any time soon.
  14. I would not have waited for the opening of Spring Training before making a move for another pitcher. DD should be working on a move to add pitching now.
  15. Unfortunately, this has been his level throughout his career.
  16. This was on of the very few games that I will miss this season. I picked a good game to miss. We score 7 runs and lose by 5. That is not acceptable. We scored 9 last night and on Saturday and lost those games too. DD needs to do something. This is atrocious. Porcello has had a real proclivity for givig up home runs since we got him. It is a bad sign for a Sinker ball pitcher to give up so many home runs.
  17. The problem had been his hands. It was chronic but now they look to be fully healthy. Now that he is in his 30's he has to pay more attention to the conditioning of his legs. He seems to have addressed that too. I expect 2 to 3 more highly productive seasons from him.
