  1. As the 8th inning guy, he's a possibility, but I don't have a high opinion of him. He's been very inconsistent, and he logs a lot of DL time.
  2. First off, if the FO is so thin-skinned that they would make moves to placate the fans to avoid being the object of criticism, they should all be fired. Their job is to improve the team. If they can"t do that and take the heat that comes along with it, they need to get out of our kitchen. As for getting a closer and keeping Bard as the 8th inning guy, other than KRod, I don't see any possibilities that I like, and KRod's price tag will probably be very high. I don't like Bell. He's 34 and he will want 3 years. I'd rather have given 4 yrs to Paps. The best thing the Sox can do to help their bullpen is to bolster the starting rotation. If they don't and fatso Jenks cannot play a significant role, the bullpen will be a shambles by the end of June.
  3. Bard is the obvious choice for closer, but who pitches the 8th inning to fill the role that Bard will be vacating? If the answer is Aceves, he will be a significant step down from Bard, and who fills Aceves role as the flex/long reliever? No matter how you slice it, this bullpen is down one big arm. Getting 1or 2 middle inning guys will not make up for what has been lost.
  4. Signing a broken down old warhorse like Nathan for 2 years/$14 million indicates that the reliever market will be inflated, especially in light of the fact that 7 teams are looking to land closers. I think there is a real possibility that the Sox will not add a power arm for the end of the bullpen at the the inflated prices. That will leave quite a hole in the pen. The starting rotation had better be healthy and strong, because a pen with this type of hole cannot standup to exposure. They will crumble early unless Fatty Jenks surprises us and contributes big time to the late inning rotation.
  5. .. and the vote is no longer unanimous. Who voted "no"? What do you suspect will be the outcome of the manager search?
  6. I do get concerned that the scouting will not translate to MLB success. There have been many 5 tool players with can't miss tags who missed. Does anyone remember Alex Ochoa? He missed big time. I'm still feeling the sting of paying so much for Dice K who had no MLB experience. At a reasonable cost, he should be considered.
  7. Mets fans were disappointed that he was fired. They hated Steve Phillips the GM.
  8. Seven teams seeking closers, that should help drive up the price.
  9. More cleaning house on the FO front:
  10. It looks like the A's want a pretty hefty price for Gio Gonzalez:
  11. I already knew everything in the article.
  12. This drives up the price for KRod. It would be a nice move if we could get him cheap, but he might go for 4/40. I'd rather have Papelbon for the price which the Phillies signed him.
  13. Valentine is very smart-- one of the rare baseball managers with an IQ in the triple digits, and he knows every fine point of the game. Due to hi intellectual superiority in the game, he has been very egotistical. He can start to wear on the players, especially the veterans, very quicky. I don't know how well the egos in the Boston press will take to him once they realize that he has little use for them and he becomes condescending. There's no question of his intelligence. Some people hear him speak and think his diction indicates low intelligence. That's a mistake.
  14. So they will be moving Feliz into the starting rotation. I guess they will not be re-signing Wilson.
  15. Under normal circumstances in a business outside of baseball, Theo would remain under contract with the Red Sox for 2012 and the Cubbies would have to have Hoyer or someone else run the team during 2012. They couldn't contact Theo, because that would constitute tampering. That would be an ugly situation for all so Selig would no doubt exercise his czar-like powers and step in for the "good of the game." The Cubs know this, so the Sox have no leverage. The Sox are going to end up taking whatever Selig decides they should get. For people as old as me, they might remember that Dick Williams quit on the A's after the 1973 World Series and signed to work for the Yankees in 1974. Williams was still under contract with the A's for at least 1974. Charlie Finley would not release Williams from his contract, so the Yankees had to hire a new manager, and Williams was without a job for 1974, because he refused to work for Charlie Finley. Finley gave Williams permission to manage the Angels in mid-1974. They were a terrible team.
  16. I expected that the responses to this poll would be predominantly "yes", but i am a bit surprised that it is unanimous. There is 1 "no" but that was SCM being wishful. He also thinks it will be Bobby V. I thought some people might have suspected that the FO was employing the misdirection tactic that they have used in the past. I guess the Sveum thing was embarrassing and this Bobby V thing is too far down the road. It's one thing to leak a story, but this is a formal interview and the owners have already interviewed him. I don't think they would jerk Bobby V around. It seems that the interview with Ben is a formality and it is a done deal. I suspect the announcement could be in the next day or two.
  17. ... and teach the pitchers to cover first base on balls hit to the right side of the IF and make Salty grow a pair so he has something to use to block pitches in the dirt.
