If we sign or trade for a starter, Aceves can go back to the bullpen where he will be a great asset. If Bard blows up in his conversion to starting, Bard can go back to the pen and Aceves can take a shot at starting. That could be a plan B.

I didn't say that Melancon was bad, but you know the stats. He's not as good as Bard, and he has been pitching in a weak Division of the NL. He's 26, the same as Bard, and he has had only one good full year. Bard is better, and he has been doing it for 3 years.

Hey, I understand. These two guys should have been gone for years. It seemed that whenever me and my son took a trip to Fenway we would always see Wakefield and Mirabelli. I joked to him one time that we would be seeing these guys for the next 20 years. I said that Wkefield will be going for his 300th win in 2030 at the rate of 5 wins a year while using a walker, and that Mirabelli would be going for his 100th HR at the rate of 2 HRs per year. I am glad they are gone. Hopefully Bobby V finalized it this weekend.

I agree with you about this. Usually there is one guy that step up with a surprise season. Last season it was Aceves, and during the first half Albers was a big surprise. When those two guys were going good at the same time, the team was rolling good, because we also had the 2 big guns at the end of the game. Papelbon and Bard have spoiled us, because they were pretty much givens as dominant performers year in and year out. If one or two more guys stepped up in a year things were great. Going into 2012, Bailey is the only given, and he is an injury concern. We need to have more guys step up and surprise, because we no longer have the two pillars -- Paps and Bard.

I was concerned when they broke camp that they were very complacent to the point of nonchalance. I was concerned that they thought they would steamroll through the season and they were believing their press clippings. The horrendous start was a wake up call.

Blurbs and stories like this don't bode well for getting another starter. Also, they are so full of s*** about all the trade candidates available in July. On August 1st we'll get the song and dance about how the trade options were too expensive and yada yada yad not wanting to sacrifice the future for the short run yada yada yada.

So now the whole argument is about some statement made about 2010? Give me a break. I thought you just wanted to make sure that the effect of the injuries were not dismissed as a cliche? Make up your mind. Spinning circles round and round.

The 5th guy needs to be a good established starter-- not great. He needs to be a guy capable of taking the ball every 5th day and giving the team a chance to win and not missing a significant number of starts. Caros Silva and Padilla and Cook don't meet these requirements. If we start out with them in the rotation, if bard has a hiccup at the beginning of the season, a tremendous strain will immediately be put on the bull pen. Also, I think you are not giving enough of analysis to the effect on the pen of moving bard to the rotation. I think most of us are around the middle of the spectrum where the overall pitching in 2012 will be around the same as last year if we don't add another starter. If we add a starter, it should be markedly improved. We don't need to spend mega-millions.
