How can we be so strapped that we can't afford Oswalt for 1 season at $8 million, when they so willingly threw $12 million at a pig like Jenks for 2 years of nothing.

Here's what were looking at for the start of the season unless Cherrington makes some moves. This may not be the order, but this is how I would do it: 1. Scutaro -SS 2. Pedroia - 2B 3. Ellsbury -CF 4. AGon - 1B 5. Youkilis - 3B 6. Ortiz - DH 7. Salty - C 8. Sweeney - RF 9. Aviles - LF Bench- Punto, D Mac, Shoppach If AL pitchers give Ortiz anything to hit, they are idiots. I expect that he will have a down year. The bench is horrible and thin. Of course, there may be some additions. Pitching Beckett Lester Bucholz Bard Doubront Bullpen Bailey - CL Melancon - SU Aceves - Swingman Morales - Late inning lefty Albers -7th inning Miller - Gabage time Atchinson

I don't know how others feel about this news. I have been trying to get myself prepared for the disappointment of not getting a starting pitcher and starting the season with pitching that is too thin. This was completely unexpected and it was like kick in the balls. Yes, I am a ridiculous emotional fan.

It's a red flag to me when we get into hopes like above. I am not above wishing a Yankee get injured, but when we go into a season hoping that Bard and Aceves can successfully convert to starting, that Aviles can play the OF, that Darnell McDonald can become a solid major leaguer in his 30's, that Bailey stays healthy and throws more than 40 innings, that Melancon can be as successful in the ALE as he was for the Stros last year, that none of our top 3 miss any starts, that Arod is in decline, that Jeter and Mo start to decline, and that CC's body breaks down, we are probably in for a very rocky season.

McDonald is a minor league hack and Aviles is an infielder. Sweeney stinks, but at least he is an outfielder. We have 2 major league outfielders. That's it. I wonder how J.D. is feeling these days. I wonder if his iddy biddy pinkie has healed.

The biggest break that Darnell McDonald got in his life was getting picked up by the Red Sox. By now, this guy would have been given a 1-way ticket to Palooka-ville from any other organization.

Killebrew, Scott and Johnny Bench all moved back and forth between 1st and 3rd base.

He actually played over 200 major league games at 3B. Harmon Killebrew played a lot o third base too. I think those players who have a problem with 3B as opposed to 1B is due to their throwing arms, not due to position being more physically demanding regarding wear and tear. I would agree that 3B is the more difficult position to play, because of the skills required. You need a strong arm and very quick reflexes, but I don't think third basemen are more susceptible to injury. Most catchers can't play the OF. That doesn't mean that the OF is the more physically demanding position. BTW: The worst injury in Killebrew's career was at !B during an All Star game. He did a full out split stretching for a throw and he tore a groin muscle.

The major league game is very fast. Even the slow guys could outrun the normal person. If a first baseman is playing toward the back of the skin IF, he can't waddle too slowly to first base. The other risk at first base is contact with the runner. You get lots of throws into the baseline and you get stepped on a fair amount too. You are right that it is the accumulation if dings, but I think it is a fair argument that you get as many dings at 1st as at 3rd. There are some games where a third baseman gets few if any plays.

Jeter hit .297 last season, but he was one of the hottest hitters on the Yanks in the second half of the season, hitting .328. Tex is bound to rebound.

What does the Ellsbury arbitration settlement do to the cap assumptions that we have been seeing?

Not really. They are still likely to go after next year's top pitching FA's. They will not have Kuroda or Garcia, and Hughes is a nice piece of trade bait.

The Yankees fortified their pitching without going for one of those guys, probably because they too are waiting for next years crop of FA pitchers.
