  1. You left out Kuroda.
  2. Sparky Lyle won the CY Young for the Yankees as their closer in 1977. In that off season they signed Goose Gossage as a FA closer, even though they still had Lyle. That's how the Yankees operate. They made a trade for an all time great SS --ARod, when they had an Alll Star at SS -Jeter. That's how the Yankees operate. They will sign one of the top pitchers next year. The 1 caveat to this is that they might stand pat if they win a championship in 2012.
  3. But the yankees took care of business and made the moves that they needed to make. We did not. Yes we have a strong top three, and hopefully Bard will be solid, but we have no #5 and zero depth. That will be something that will burn us.
  4. I've played both positions, and there is a lot more movement at first base. You are involved in so many more plays at 1B., and even on the groundballs that go through the IF, the first baseman is running to cover the bag at the crack of the bat. You can't wait to see if the ball goes through before you head to first or it is too late. At 3B, you can stand and watch plays to the right side of the IF. First base has it's share of diving plays as does 3B. It just doesn't have the long throw. I really don't see the argument that 3B is more taxing. It can be more frightening, because it is the hot corner. You need quick reflexes at 3rd, but other than that, first base has much more movement. As far as I know, Youk's physical issues have not been related to his throwing arm.
  5. You can bank on it that they will sign Hamel if he is on the market.
  6. Other than your throwing arm, I think it probably is just as wearing to play first base where you get many more plays every game.
  7. I have just about given up hope about the Red Sox picking up a starting pitcher before opening day. First, we heard that they were being patient and waiting for prices to come down. Now, Oswalt is out there like low hanging fruit at $8 million for one year and the story in the press is that the Sox would have to clear cap space. That's the signal that it ain't gonna happen. Someone else will sign him, and the story in the press will be that they couldn't move fast enough to clear the cap space or something like that. I am not expecting any big trades either. We will have to get used to what we've got. It reminds me of a slogan that a Mets fan came up to describe one of their off seasons. "You'll get nothing. You'll pay more for it, and you'll like it."
  8. If Butler to the Yankees happens, I will vomit. What the hell does Benny Boy have in the works? Does he have anything in the works?
  9. If we sign or trade for a starter, Aceves can go back to the bullpen where he will be a great asset. If Bard blows up in his conversion to starting, Bard can go back to the pen and Aceves can take a shot at starting. That could be a plan B.
  10. I didn't say that Melancon was bad, but you know the stats. He's not as good as Bard, and he has been pitching in a weak Division of the NL. He's 26, the same as Bard, and he has had only one good full year. Bard is better, and he has been doing it for 3 years.
  11. Damn E1! You are bringing me down. Stop that. I do fear he Rangers in this.
  12. Hey, I understand. These two guys should have been gone for years. It seemed that whenever me and my son took a trip to Fenway we would always see Wakefield and Mirabelli. I joked to him one time that we would be seeing these guys for the next 20 years. I said that Wkefield will be going for his 300th win in 2030 at the rate of 5 wins a year while using a walker, and that Mirabelli would be going for his 100th HR at the rate of 2 HRs per year. I am glad they are gone. Hopefully Bobby V finalized it this weekend.
  13. Maybe tomorrow is the day.
  14. I agree with you about this. Usually there is one guy that step up with a surprise season. Last season it was Aceves, and during the first half Albers was a big surprise. When those two guys were going good at the same time, the team was rolling good, because we also had the 2 big guns at the end of the game. Papelbon and Bard have spoiled us, because they were pretty much givens as dominant performers year in and year out. If one or two more guys stepped up in a year things were great. Going into 2012, Bailey is the only given, and he is an injury concern. We need to have more guys step up and surprise, because we no longer have the two pillars -- Paps and Bard.
  15. I was concerned when they broke camp that they were very complacent to the point of nonchalance. I was concerned that they thought they would steamroll through the season and they were believing their press clippings. The horrendous start was a wake up call.
  16. Thanks. Green Bay played very sloppy. They were outplayed in every aspect today.
  17. I'm envisioning something more subtle and nonviolent like Tek and Wakefield throwing banana peel on the floor in the clubhouse and the showers.
  18. Yes, I am a Giants fan-- and they say we agree on everything.
  19. Damon still has something to bring to the table.
