The plan is for them to compete for rotation spots and they are probably favored to win those spots. If they are in the rotation, they need to be replaced in the bullpen.

Yeah you are missing something. We lost our 3 best relievers from the 2011 pen-- Papelbon, Bard and Aceves. Bard and Aceves are going to new roles in the starting rotation with no track record for success. Two relievers have been obtained to replace those 3, and they are not as good as any of the 3 being replaced.

Forget about explaining why our 2012 pitching as currently constructed is worse than our 2011 pitching. People have made this case over and over. The answer that we are getting is that we can't be sure. Okay, that's really an effective parry. Puhlease! How about someone attempting to make the case (backed up with facts and stats) that our 2012 pitching as currently constructed will be better than our 2011 pitching. Have at it. My guess is that they will all run for the doors or continue to argue that we can't know that our pitching will be worse. I'd like to hear why it will be better. Please leave out that we will have Buch back for the whole season. Injuries are part of the game, and our top 3 haven't been healthy for an entire season in several years.

There's nothing that anyone can point to that makes me believe that our 2012 starting staff or bullpen will be better in 2012 than 2011. The three best guys from our bullpen are no loner there. Two of them are headed to the rotation to be starters, something neither has done as a regular major league role. Bard sucked as a starter in the minors. To expect the 2012 pitching to be improved based on the personnel changes requires blind faith in the success of Bard and Aceves in their new roles. I'd love to see that, but I am not expecting that. I have no basis to believe that will be the case. If they both flop were screwed. If one flops that could also throw the season in the toilet. If we get an established 4th starter, we can have Bard and Aceves compete for the 5th spot. We'd only need one of them to succeed. The other one would go back to the bullpen which would help the pen. Getting another starter is the far superior scenario. As things stand now, our pitching could rapidly fall apart.

Why would you think the pressure to make Bard a starter is coming from the fans? I don't think that is or has been the case at all. Most fans wanted to see him as the closer. If there is pressure for Bard to start, it is coming from Bard. Do you really think Silva or Miller are dependable rotation guys? I view them more as depth guys. If they are in the rotation, who are the depth starters?

Who do you think will be the other starter if only one of them ends up in the rotation? Edit: How do you expect Bard and Aceves to perform as starters?

I am curious though. You have read the thread. Who are all these big money stiffs that the old guys want to sign? As far as I can see, everyone just wants one more starter. What do you realistically expect from Bard and Aceves in starting roles, and don't you think that pulling them both out of the bull pen leaves a big hole in the pen?

That's why I only use it on rare occasions. I have to wit until there has been sufficient membership turnover.

Although consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, in general I think a big market team that charges high ticket prices owes it to their fans to spend money to put a good product on the field. Last season the Cubs were not just bad in the standings, but they were dreadfully boring to watch. This year that situation looks like it might get worse. I just don't think it is the right approach for the fans.

It would be interesting to put him in LF for around 80-90 games with Crawford flip flopping between LF and RF. We need a RH bat. There are few better. Count me in.

I'd love to have him if he is healthy. He is going on 28 and I think he only pitched one full season where he didn't spend substantial time on the DL.

I think you owe me a royalty. That's a good definition of what dumpster diving is outside of baseball. I like to apply the term to injured, rehabbing, damaged or over the hill pitchers who have been discarded by their teams. They have been thrown in the trash heap or the dumpster. Our GM has apparently spent a lot of time sifting through the dumpster this off season.

ANd if Aceves ends up in the rotation, we need Albers, Melancon and Bailey to fill the void of Aceves, Bard and Papelbon. That's a tall order.

I wouldn't call what the Marlins have been doing to be rebuilding. For the last several years they have been a failing small market franchise with a small budget. They are getting a new stadium and they are making a big push to establish a foothold with a fan base. This is probably their last shot to make things work there. The Cubs are in a very different spot. They are in a big market with a loyal fan base and a lot of money for payroll. There is no need to be rebuilding like a small market team with a small budget. That's my opinion.

Signing Saunders for the pen or if Aceves went back to the pen, thjat would give some good starting depth, not the dollar store rejects that we have been signing. Maybe one of those guys shows some promise during the spring, but it is more likely that they all are bags of s***. It's fine to take fliers on guys to with the hope of adding depth, but you have to have some depth that is reliable. We don't.

I agree with this with one condition. They need another starter so Aceves can go back to the bullpen. As things are currently, Bard and Aceves are rolls of the dice as starters. The back of our bullpen is Albers, Melancon and Bailey. Last year it was Aceves, Bard and Papelbon. I don't see this year's bullpen as close to comparable with the 2011 pen unless Aceves moves back to the pen. As to the health issue, when was the last time that Beckett, Buchholz and Lester all stayed healthy throughout the season? Depth important, and SIlva et al are not depth.
