  1. McDonald is a minor league hack and Aviles is an infielder. Sweeney stinks, but at least he is an outfielder. We have 2 major league outfielders. That's it. I wonder how J.D. is feeling these days. I wonder if his iddy biddy pinkie has healed.
  2. I can be brutal.
  3. The biggest break that Darnell McDonald got in his life was getting picked up by the Red Sox. By now, this guy would have been given a 1-way ticket to Palooka-ville from any other organization.
  4. Maybe if he had returned his calls we'd have found out about the soreness earlier in the off season.
  5. This is truly pathetic.
  6. Ellsbury and Sweeney.
  7. This Crawford news is disastrous. We are down to 2 outfielders.
  8. This comes way too late for David Ortiz.
  9. Killebrew, Scott and Johnny Bench all moved back and forth between 1st and 3rd base.
  10. He actually played over 200 major league games at 3B. Harmon Killebrew played a lot o third base too. I think those players who have a problem with 3B as opposed to 1B is due to their throwing arms, not due to position being more physically demanding regarding wear and tear. I would agree that 3B is the more difficult position to play, because of the skills required. You need a strong arm and very quick reflexes, but I don't think third basemen are more susceptible to injury. Most catchers can't play the OF. That doesn't mean that the OF is the more physically demanding position. BTW: The worst injury in Killebrew's career was at !B during an All Star game. He did a full out split stretching for a throw and he tore a groin muscle.
  11. The major league game is very fast. Even the slow guys could outrun the normal person. If a first baseman is playing toward the back of the skin IF, he can't waddle too slowly to first base. The other risk at first base is contact with the runner. You get lots of throws into the baseline and you get stepped on a fair amount too. You are right that it is the accumulation if dings, but I think it is a fair argument that you get as many dings at 1st as at 3rd. There are some games where a third baseman gets few if any plays.
  12. Jeter hit .297 last season, but he was one of the hottest hitters on the Yanks in the second half of the season, hitting .328. Tex is bound to rebound.
  13. What does the Ellsbury arbitration settlement do to the cap assumptions that we have been seeing?
  14. Not really. They are still likely to go after next year's top pitching FA's. They will not have Kuroda or Garcia, and Hughes is a nice piece of trade bait.
  15. The Yankees fortified their pitching without going for one of those guys, probably because they too are waiting for next years crop of FA pitchers.
  16. You left out Kuroda.
  17. Sparky Lyle won the CY Young for the Yankees as their closer in 1977. In that off season they signed Goose Gossage as a FA closer, even though they still had Lyle. That's how the Yankees operate. They made a trade for an all time great SS --ARod, when they had an Alll Star at SS -Jeter. That's how the Yankees operate. They will sign one of the top pitchers next year. The 1 caveat to this is that they might stand pat if they win a championship in 2012.
  18. But the yankees took care of business and made the moves that they needed to make. We did not. Yes we have a strong top three, and hopefully Bard will be solid, but we have no #5 and zero depth. That will be something that will burn us.
  19. I've played both positions, and there is a lot more movement at first base. You are involved in so many more plays at 1B., and even on the groundballs that go through the IF, the first baseman is running to cover the bag at the crack of the bat. You can't wait to see if the ball goes through before you head to first or it is too late. At 3B, you can stand and watch plays to the right side of the IF. First base has it's share of diving plays as does 3B. It just doesn't have the long throw. I really don't see the argument that 3B is more taxing. It can be more frightening, because it is the hot corner. You need quick reflexes at 3rd, but other than that, first base has much more movement. As far as I know, Youk's physical issues have not been related to his throwing arm.
  20. You can bank on it that they will sign Hamel if he is on the market.
  21. Other than your throwing arm, I think it probably is just as wearing to play first base where you get many more plays every game.
  22. I have just about given up hope about the Red Sox picking up a starting pitcher before opening day. First, we heard that they were being patient and waiting for prices to come down. Now, Oswalt is out there like low hanging fruit at $8 million for one year and the story in the press is that the Sox would have to clear cap space. That's the signal that it ain't gonna happen. Someone else will sign him, and the story in the press will be that they couldn't move fast enough to clear the cap space or something like that. I am not expecting any big trades either. We will have to get used to what we've got. It reminds me of a slogan that a Mets fan came up to describe one of their off seasons. "You'll get nothing. You'll pay more for it, and you'll like it."
  23. If Butler to the Yankees happens, I will vomit. What the hell does Benny Boy have in the works? Does he have anything in the works?
