Lamar Odom is an overrated player. He wouldn't be nearly as effective as he has been if the defense didn't have to double team Kobe before he even touches the ball. Inconsistency plagued Odom in the first half of the season, he got a lot better in the second half, but that's still half of a season that the Lakers went without a consistent #2. Even if I were to concede that Lamar Odom is some kind of capable player opposite of Kobe, I could throw Smush Parker, Chris Mihm, and Kwame Brown (who couldn't even perform when he was in a lineup with Jordan) at you in addition to a pathetic bench. Not one of those three would be starting on any of the other playoff teams. Lamar Odom is their second best player by a LONG SHOT -- and that's a bad thing. Their back up Center is a guy in his first year out of High School, playing against the big men in the West.
No matter what, take Kobe out of the Lakers line up and take Nash out of the Suns line up -- the Suns lineup, Leandro Barbosa inserted in, looks a hell of a lot more attractive than the Lakers roster in that case.
The case is the same as last year. In the system in which they play, and the shooters that they surround Nash with, it's not difficult to pass to a career 40+% 3 point shooter and get the assist. Hell, I'll debate last years MVP award too.
Last year Steve Nash Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, two of the premiere players in the entire league surrounding him (plus shooters like Joe Johnson and Q-Rich) -- with all that talent, how could he have been MVP? This year, we're finding out that the guys they've inserted into their lineup this year are pretty damn capable players -- especially Raja Bell and Boris Diaw.
Steve Nash being MVP is a joke. He should've finished in 4th in the voting. Shame on the media for letting their personal opinion of Kobe Bryant off the court affect their voting.
edit: And where the hell does this ball hog crap come from? He does what he needs to do to win games given the talent surrounding him. He wasn't a ball hog when he was with Shaq, when he averaged one whole assist more per year than he did this year.
And Steve Nash is athletic and aware enough to put up the offensive numbers -- what gives on the defensive end? He's one of the worst at his position at something that makes up half of the game. Not very valuable to me.
